Wonderful, Responsive & Tack Sharp
I own a great deal of glass... lenses litter my office. Most of the lenses I'm glad I purchased and a few, well, those go to the Land of Ebay. This one, however, will never be far from my camera(s). I owned the predecessor, the 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 HSM, an excellent lens and a supreme value. Effectively, a 25-105mm, perfect walkabout lens with Macro capability - equally adept at the candid portrait as well as the quick nature shot. Images post process quite well. So, it was a bit of trepidation that I purchased the updated lens... would it perform as well? Would the OS (Image stabilization built into the lens) be effective? Is it still a great value Nikon lens? Fortunately, the answer to all three questions is a resounding yes. If anything, images are a bit sharper out of camera. OS is effective from 2-3 stops. And absolutely, this lens is a phenomenal value especially compared to the fantastic 17-55mm f/2.8 NIKON lens priced at a healthy four figures. So unless you're loaded...

Sigma 17-70 OS review
I recently bought this lens to be used on a D80 Nikon body. It is a replacement for a Nikon 18-70 lens. In the time that I have had this lens I have been real pleased with the performance of the lens. I have had no problems with the auto-focus system. It is fast and locks solidly. I have had no problems even in low light conditions. The os works good but it doesn't always release right away. If I shut off the camera it releases right away but if left on it takes approx.30 seconds to turn off. This lens is quite sharp when stopped down to F5.6 and destroys the Nikon 18-70 lens across the entire focal range. It has a fair amount of distortion at wide angle but not as much as the 18-70. One thing that I'm going to have to get used to is the focus ring rotates when zooming in or out and I tend to have my hand touching the focus ring accidentally. Hopefully I can adjust to this. I think for this price range lens it is built very solidly. Unless the...

Sigma's 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM is the practical zoom! A large-aperture, standard zoom lens for digital cameras with an open-aperture value of F2.8 (at 17mm) and covers the most frequently used focal lengths. With an aperture fast enough to be used in many light situations, its close focusing for use with very small object and its outstanding optical performance make this an ideal all-around lens for landscapes, portraits, still life studies, group shots and just about any everyday photo situation. The OS, Sigma's anti shake feature, offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. The OS feature allows Sony and Pentax users the option of viewing a stabilized image in the viewfinder, a feature offered only by Sigma. HSM ensures quiet and high speed AF capability. With a faster aperture than the typical camera "kit lens" it is an excellent choice for the photographer who has higher expectations for their photo equipment. Top to learn more

Canon copy with no focus problems
I read several reviews of the Canon version of this lens that said it was common to get a copy that focuses inaccurately. I'm here to say I took the chance and got a good copy! Mine focuses perfectly, right where the camera's focus points light up. I'm using the lens on a T2i, which doesn't have focus microadjust, and they worked together right out of the box.Image quality is great. It is a touch soft at the wide aperture at longer focal lengths, but definitely still print worthy. Stopping down a bit sharpens it up nicely. f/2.8 at 17mm is really good, and the middle apertures are always excellent. Colors and contrast look fine to me, and flare seems well controlled. It has GREAT bokeh.HSM focuses quickly and pretty quietly. It does NOT have full-time manual. I think all of the audible noise comes from the sliding of the focus ring rather than the motor. Sometimes if the lens needs to drastically change the focus distance, it will hunt and there is some quiet...

Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 OS HSM
I received the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 OS HSM from Amazon five days ago. I have taken about 400 shots with this lens, including landscapes, indoor family gatherings with flash, and a sporting event in a large, well-lit indoor arena. It seems to me that this lens works as advertised. I don't see focus problems with this lens in either the AI Servo to AI Focus modes on my Canon XSi. The XSi exposure metering seems to work fine with the Sigma 17-70, and I cannot see anything wrong with color accuracy. The finish, appearance, and feel of the lens are pleasing. I like it, and it certainly seems to be a good value given its relatively low cost vs. function. I have awarded four stars in my rating only because of my limited experience with this lens. If this lens continues to work as it has so far, I would award a fifth star.Photography is my hobby, not my profession, but I carry my camera to work and shoot nearly every day. I cannot afford high-end camera equipment, so I make...

Good Lens for the Budget.
I purchased this lens to replace my 18-55mm canon kit lens. I didn't read too much reviews on this lens because it was new, but I heard relatively good reviews on the older model and with the addition of the HSM and optical stabilizer, it gave it more appeal. It is a great walk around lens. It has good range and the f2.8-4 is nice, but the 2.8 does disappear really quickly when zooming in from wide angle. It takes sharp photos from wide angle to zoom, and macro. The Body is well built with a solid construction. The focus and zoom rings feel good when rotating. The HSM is really quiet while auto focusing. The auto focus is a bit slow and sometimes has problems focusing during low light situations. Overall the lens works well and it gives me good results. Definitely a great replacement to the canon kit lens.

Great lens
I bought this lens for my new Pentax K-5, which I decided to buy body-only and then get a lens superior to the kit lens that comes with it (which is decent, but I wanted better and more luminous). So after quite a bit of research on Internet forums and checking prices, I settled on the Sigma 17-70 (f/2.8-4), and I am very happy with it. You can see technical reviews out there with all the details, I'll just give my subjective impression -- and everything is to be taken as related to the lens' performance using the fantastic K-5, a different camera will have different results. The lens is really sharp, except of course at the widest apertures; but even then, it is not noticeable unless you like to observe a 16 Mpix image at 100%. The focus is very fast and usually accurate -- but a lot of this is camera software, anyway. The focus mechanism, HSM, is very silent. The range of zoom, from 17 to 70 mm is very nice, I prefer it much better to my old Pentax K10D's 18-55mm. I don't need to...

Sharp and Quiet - worth the price
I bought this lens as a replacement for the kit lens that came with my Pentax K10d. I was unsure about buying a Sigma lens, but Pentax doesn't offer a 17-70mm zoom lens with 72mm objective. Well, it was a good decision. I was very pleased at how sharp this lens is, and its performance in low light. The in-lens stabilization is better than that in the K10 camera body, enabling me to hand-hold at as low as 1/10 sec shutter speed. The autofocus works well with the Pentax body, and is much quieter than any other AF lens I've owned. The Sigma is heavier than the kit lens, and its weight does make it zoom out when not in use. I don't consider this to be a problem. The lens was also more expensive than I was hoping for, but it's turned out to be a good value.

Sigma for Pentax K20D
Unless you're flush with cash, a Pentax DA* lens is a bit beyond your financial reach. In a search for a faster alternative to hopefully replace a lens with affordable "glass", enter the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 short zoom. I bought mine from another vendor and took advantage of a fellow-Pentax owner's coupon codes which brought the price down to $389.00 - including shipping to Alaska. Aside from the good deal, I still had my doubts. I've shot a couple of hundred images since and will confidently say that the Sigma is better than any entry-level lens that Pentax has to offer in its class. My shots are sharper and more consistent which relates to a level of confidence that I didn't have with my kit lens, it's replacement (18-55mm, second edition) and, the 18-250mm zoom. All affordable but with a variance in results. Drawbacks? It's a heavy lens. The K20D is a beefy, heavy camera. The combination makes for a weighty hardware composite yet, it's what I like. The weight in your...

his large aperture standard zoom lens offers an aperture of F2.8 at the 17mm focal length and is ideal for many situations such as portraits, sports, macro and general photography. For Sony and Pentax mount, the built-in OS function of this lens can be used even if the camera body is equipped with an anti-shake function. As the compensation for camera shake is visible in the view finder, the photographer can easily check for accurate focus and ensure there is no subject movement. The maximum aperture of F2.8 makes this lens ideal for hand held photography as well as producing an attractive background blur and high speed auto focus. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 22cm (8.7??) throughout the entire zoom range and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7, making it ideal for close-up photography. Incompatible with Sony a65/a77, front focus issue
I confirm Sigma did dropped OS from Sony version of this lens. Besides that there is no clear indication on their web site that AF does not work properly with a65/a77 cameras. Please don't buy from Abes of Maine - huge hassle to return an obviously defective, misrepresented (no OS) and incompatible product, filed Amazon A-Z claim.

After spending an hour with the Tamron and Canon competitors...
So I've been bouncing back and forth between the big three competitors. If you're looking at this lens, you've probably weighed Tamron's 2.8 17-50 VC and Canon's more expensive but much beloved 2.8 18-55 IS that's been out for a few years. I finally broke down and went into a store to wrap my hands around all three, shoot some comparative video with the various IS/VC/OS, futz with the focus rings and zoom, etc. I did not run a full professional test on the image quality, but those reviews can be easily found online. In most fields the Sigma beats the Tamron, like Bokeh and low distortion. The Tamron is ever so slightly sharper at 2.8. At 2.8, I do get some easily visible circular distortion in the corners with the Sigma when pointing the camera at a window or bright source. I basically determined that image quality between the lenses was a draw. The Canon tests slightly better, but I found looking through that lens for the very first time that I was getting all sorts of...

Gorgeous Glass
First, lets establish a few things about me, the reviewer, before you go on to read my review. I am a full time professional photographer. Weddings, portraits and glamor is where I specialize. I own two Nikon cameras; D300 and D700. I own a total of 6 lenses for use on these camera bodies; Nikkor 35mm f/1.8, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, Sigma 85mm f/1.4, Sigma 70mm Macro and this lens, Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8.Immediately, this should tell you a few things. One, I make money doing photography -- full time. I'm a professional and as a professional, I do not take short cuts when it comes to equipment. I need quality and dependable equipment and my gear needs to work hard. My results must meet high standards for my clients. Secondly, if you look at the various lenses I own, you should be able to ascertain that I do not hold loyalties to BRANDING. Yes, I own Nikon cameras and I love Nikon; but contrary to all the fluff out there by the brand using die-hards, you can...

A very good lens
I am a serious hobbiest, with a Nikon D90. Other lenses in my kit include the 18-105VR, 70-300VR, 300mmf4, 35mmf1.8 and 50mmf1.8. The use of the short fast primes (35mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.8) really opened me up to available light photography, but I don't always want to constantly switching back-and-forth, or trying to zoom with my feet (which is not always possible in the confines of a small room). There's a time and place for the primes, but I decided that it was time to pick up a fast zoom to compliment what I already had. I tried a couple of options, and was very pleasently surprised by the Sigma 17-50mm OS.Sharpness---------Plain and simple, the lens is sharp. The image center is quite sharp throughout the zoom range, even wide open. The borders are reasonable good at f/2.8, but are noticeably less sharp than the center, when under 30mm. Realistically, I doubt I'll use f/2.8 for many shots where I require critical sharpness for the entire frame. Stopping...
