This is a great book for the Do-it your self, back yard, VW mechanic. Information is easy to find and easy to use. This book has full wiring diagrams. They were color coded at one time, but the black and white version is still quite useful. I find this book has much more info than the Chilton repair guide. If I had to choose one manual for my VW, this would be the one.

Haynes Repair & Workshop manual is one of the best
I own 12 different Repair/Workshop/service manuals that cover My 1968 1500 Beetle and the 1600 engine. This is the manual I read most, when I find a problem. Its well written, has many photographs, diagrams and exploded view diagrams which show You how things go back together after You have pulled them apart. I can't think of any subjects that are missing or not well recorded. I would recommend this manual to anyone owning a Volkswagen Beetle, in any country, LHD or Right Hand Drive.This manual won't let You down... its great...

Invaluable
This book provides a great blend of inspiring historical context, beautiful photographs, and detailed information. In addition to all that it serves as a great buyers guide - helped me decide which bug I wanted and empowered me to confidently know what to look for. Combined with John Muir's classic you can be a bug aficionado in a couple of days. If you don't care to buy or own a bug it's a great auto enthusiasts coffee table book about one of auto history's most important cars. Bravo!

Haynes New Beetle Repair Manual
Fairly comprenhensive with basic procedures. The manual is very easy to read and follow. However, a bit generic to enable percise electrical troubleshooting as the diagrams are not TDI specific and therefore are inaccurate. This results in missed opportunities to complete repairs to the electrical systems of the TDI models.

Like most Haynes manuals
A pretty great general understanding is available in this book. However, some of the nitty gritty details that one at times requires to know are simply not there. I once heard the saying "its enough to get you into trouble, but not enough to get you out," and I feel that for serious jobs, thats the case with this book. Still so much knowledge for such a good price gives it 4 stars in my book.

Bentley is better
If you want more than the routine maintenance items, get the Bentley. The MK4 chassis and engines have some quirks that are not covered in the Haynes manual, like how to get a stubborn, rusted strut out of the car or all of the VAG codes

A great 'how to' book that gives you general guidelines in all the important areas as to how to go about building a custom Beetle. Probably not quite detailed enough for an experienced Beetle customizer looking for all the latest and greatest mods. It's aimed primarily at someone doing this for the first time. His other book, 'Air-Cooled VW Engine Interchange Manual' (5 stars), is the next step down as far as detail is concerned and concentrates on engine specific information.

A Good Beginner Book but Dangerous
I found Vw Beetle Performance Handbook by Keith Seume the perfect book for a beginner. It has valuable information on all aspects of building a car Suspension, Brakes, Transmission, and Engine. I will definetly use much of the upgrades he described. Yet I find many of his engine modifications dangerous. What I mean by this is he says for the ultimate motor. Get an 84x94 engine, 44x37.5 heads, MSD 6AL, merged header with turbo muffler, and Weber 48 IDA's. This is all in all good advice yet he completely neglects valvetrain geometry and connecting rods. Without strengthening the valvetrain you will most likely suck a valve putting a piston through the case and wrecking the rod. Without stengthening the rod the most likely reaction to this would be a snapped connecting-rod effectivley wrecking you crank, head, and case. His vague descriptions could ultimately wreck YOUR case, connecting rods, piston, heads, and your bone-stock valvetrain geometry. In summation a good beginner...

More than Just Engines!
This book is great, it deals with most of the issues surounding Beetle perfomance. There are a lot of books around detailing how to uprate your engine, but this book also deals with suspension and more importantly braking systems!
