In "Evil Queen Tut," Zack is accidentally shrunken down to insect size and encounters the villain of the title: she is the dictatorial monarch of a surprisingly advanced ant civilization. Zack is a likeable hero, and there are some clever jokes and plot points. Overall, this book is good silly fun.

Amazing Adventure
Zack meets an Egyptian ant in Central Park on a school trip. The Egyptian ant doesn't mean an ant from Egypt but an ant who has a culture like old Egypt. And the ant Zack meets is a slave ant who escaped from a colony. Zack decide helping her. What adventures are waiting him?I think this is a good adventure story. Author sets very special situations and makes the story interesting.Many things happen in short time. And many ideas in the story that let you surprise.Especially I felt familiar with the Egypt stuff in this story because I visited Egypt this May.Enjoy the adventures with Zack!

Couldn't Put This Book Down!
I enjoyed reading this book so much that I couldn't put it down. Kevin Brown, a resident of the fictional Turquoise, NM--which is a lot like Taos, including the mountain and the Hum--meets two new friends and is immediately swept up in an adventure through which he discovers the secret of the Hum and the importance of his own choices and powers. Spencer Baum writes with an eye to ideas, but he never loses his sense of fun and adventure. His teens are both believable and likeable. Most importantly, Baum lets the action carry the themes; he is never preachy. This is a great book for young adults and the young at heart!

The Demon Queen and the Locksmith
The fantasy genre has been severely neglected in my reading materials over the years, although I have read some. One way "The Demon Queen and the Locksmith" differs from what I've previously read is the "story world" is at least nominally the world in which all of us live. Whether genre purists would still consider this fantasy or not, I have no idea. At least for me, that doesn't matter, the story does, and in this case it is a good one.The first day of high school is trying for everyone. For Kevin it starts out worse than most. His reaction, fleeing school for the day, sets off a chain of events leading to a magical adventure. It allows him a temporary escape from his less-than-perfect life and in the end to change it for the better.Throughout the book, it felt more like a fairy tale than a typical fantasy. I often found myself thinking the story was allegorical although, if so, I was never able to pinpoint why I felt that or deduce the symbolism. In...

Humor Creates Interest, Leads to Learning
My son is not an insect person. But I looked at this book and found it very funny and very clever. The worker ants wear construction helmets, the queen wears a tiara, you get the idea. I brought it home from the library with a bunch of other books on sea life and outer space, my son's usual topics. After initially rejecting the Ant book, he picked it up and then couldn't put it down. We ended up buying it. He loves it. He takes it in the car and is now full of all kinds of fun facts about ants. He has even become interested in bees and other insects as a result. Who knew. Just goes to show you that a funny and clever presentation can get a kid interested in just about anything.

The Life and Time of the Ant is a cartoon type book all about ants. We learn lots of neat things about the ant family. We leaned how they communicate, about the parts of an ant's body, and all about the various kids of any in the world. One section of the book is about hoe important the ant is in the Rain Forest. We are told that ants eat insect pests, plant gardens in trees, removing decaying animals from the forest floor, and thin out plants that over crowd the forest.The pictures are drawn in a cartoon like style. They were neat to look at while reading. This would make a great read aloud for elementry classroom during a science unit on ants. Lots of great information is presented in a kid friendly way.
