Perfect Pet Manual
This is no lightweight 10 page pamphlet, instead an incredibly in depth look into every area of ferret keeping, from origins, behaviour, colours, patterns, adoption, care, feeding, taming handling, ailments, breeding, training and more. Of particular interest to me was the section on keeping a ferret with other pets, as we had considered adding a pair of ferrets to our menagerie, and after reading this essential guide, we now most certainly will. This book should be adopted as the new ferret keeping manual of choice.

Very weel written with everything you want to know!
I purchased this book specifically to learn more about why so many people are in love with ferrets. That's because my brother and his girlfriend had 6 ferrets that were not trained and practically destroyed their house. I didn't know they could be trained and I'm sure they didn't either. Some people just like to have pets and I think that's the type of pet owner Sarah was (my poor brother). Before you go out and invest in ferrets, you must know they are not legal in all states and you MUST get this book first. You'll learn how to prepare your home for a ferret, types of ferrets, important things to consider, shelters and adoption, medical issues, abnormal behavior, poop analysis (evidently this is very important!), old age, appropriate toys and games, and a list of FAQs. The author appears to be intimately acquainted with ferrets and provides everything you want and need to know before bringing a ferret into your family. Highly recommended.

Product Description

Author and official ferret nut, David Rand has been offering ferret tips to the ferret community for the past 6 years. In that time over 7,000 ferret owners (and beginners) have told him they want more and he finally gave in and wrote the book on the subject. When we asked him to summarise what readers would find he said:

"If you want to find out what some of the world's top ferret experts recommend to make it easy for you to keep your ferret happy, healthy, safe, playful and pooping in the right place, this is the book for you."

Drawing from, not only his own expertise, but also from extensive interviews with some of the top ferret care specialists from places like Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia (specialists who do it for a living every day at home AND at work), this book is the culmination of that information on ferret care.

David further explained:

"This ferret care guide was created to give you the steps, tips and tricks you need to ensure that both your ferret AND you get the most fun and enjoyment out of your relationship. Imagine you really understood exactly why your ferret acts the way he does (and knew how to easily fix any bad behaviour any time you wanted to!) "

Imagine you knew how to quickly get your ferret to listen to you, keep him safe from harm, follow your instructions (AND go to the toilet where you want him to). If you know the right way to look after your ferret, it's easy!"

This book contains the information which comes from years and years of real, hands on experience - including step-by-step answers to those tricky ferret questions that you've been looking up online or trying to talk to your local pet store about and just can't seem to find the answer for.

Some of the informative sections you can find in this book are:

• Your Ferret, Your Home and Your Children
• Your Ferret's Home and Litter box
• Buying or Adopting A New Ferret
• Maintaining a Healthy & Safe Ferret
• Washing Your Ferret
• Ferret Grooming
• Ferret Behaviour
• Handling Your Ferret
• Stopping your ferret from biting, scratching and gnawing
• Travelling with Your Ferret

Just a few of the techniques covered are:
How to completely ferret proof your home to ensure that EVERYONE has a great time when your ferret is out playing.

What foods are potentially toxic to your ferret and what ones will keep him healthy.

The length of time your ferret needs to have out of his (or her) cage each day
(make sure you don't miss this one as you could have a very grouchy ferret on your hands).

A step-by-step guide to picking up your ferret correctly AND how to help your children safely handle him and have him avoid nipping them repeatedly.

The 3 commonly used items to make a ferrets sleeping area more comfortable which can BADLY damage your ferret's health (make sure you're not using these in your ferret's cage).

A complete guide to house training your ferret to go to the toilet where YOU want him to (including information on a disinfectant that can be highly toxic to ferrets if used to clean out the litter box).

Mastering the art of toilet training your ferret.

The 12 things to look for in your ferret when buying or adopting a ferret (if you don't know these, you risk buying an unhealthy ferret).

The reason why washing a ferret more often will actually make him smell WORSE - and a complete guide to how often you should really wash your ferret, including a cleanout schedule for bedding and litter box.

What cheap and readily available product you can use if your ferret is smelly (this will eliminate that strong scent easily).

A complete guide to cutting your ferrets nails – keeping your ferrets nails the right length is very important and if done badly can injure your ferret as well as any unlucky onlookers!

A comprehensive step-by-step guide to understanding the most common ferret health problems and what you can easily do to help prevent them from occurring.

How to keep your ferret comfortable, whatever the weather.

A good book for beginers.
I thought this was a good book that had all the basic information a beginer will need to raise a ferret. But the author wasn't very consintant with his nollege. He repeated himself a lot and some of the information didn't add up to what he said earlier in the book. I would have liked some more in depth information about some topics because I still have many questions not answered about my fuzzies I have at home. But over all it was a pretty good book.

Dummies for Ferrets
I can't imagine owning my ferret Tycho without the aid of this book. When my ferret lost weight and began vomiting, I panicked and agonized over what could possibly be wrong with the little guy. After he calmed down and I calmed down, I grabbed this indispensable tome and began reading to see if I could figure out what might be wrong. It turns out that ferrets are some times susceptible to all manner of little bugs just like we are, and while they can be worrisome, do not actual long term harm. And that's all it was, a virus had nailed Tycho and weight loss was a common seasonal thing. A trip to the vet confirmed our what we had read. Tycho is much better, and so are we.Kim Schilling's book is probably the best there is for owning a fert. She gives all sorts of insights into what makes them tick-how they play, what their body language means-something that taught us a valuable lesson during a thunder storm. Tycho was so frightened by the noise that when my wife picked him up and...

A must have for ferret lovers and first time ferret meeters
Ferrets for Dummies is the only ferret book I have read that can be usefull to both new and old ferret owners a like. For new ferret owners and even first time ferret meeters, this book really helps the reader get to know the general personality of ferrets. Ferrets are a wonderful pet.......for the right person. Ferrets for Dummies helps you know if a ferret is the right pet for you before you go out and buy one. If first time ferret owners read this book before they went out and purchased a ferret, there may be less homeless and neglected ferrets and a smaller need for ferret shelters. This book helps explain what to expect from your ferret and how to care for it, from before your new pets arrival home until its final days!! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested or involved in ferret ownership.

Great pocket pet book
I'm not a pocket pet expert at all, so this is my "go to" book when I get a small critter in. Lots of information, and very easy to navigate. Nice drug charts in the back too.

Great!
This book is a great reference for ferrets and rabbits, as well as others, like guinea pigs, sugar gliders, hamsters, etc.My only complaint about this book is that the pictures are all black-and-white. However, the text is good enough that you usually don't need the pics.

Product Description

A concise guide to the care of small mammals, Ferrets, Rabbits, and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery covers the conditions seen most often in veterinary practice. The book emphasizes preventive medicine along with topics including disease management, ophthalmology, dentistry, and zoonosis. More than 400 illustrations demonstrate key concepts related to radiographic interpretation, relevant anatomy, and diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic techniques. Now in full color, this edition adds coverage of more surgical procedures and expands coverage of zoonotic disease. From editors Katherine Quesenberry and James W. Carpenter, along with a team of expert contributors, the "Pink Book" provides an authoritative, single source of information that is hard to find elsewhere.

  • A logical organization makes it quick and easy to find important information, with each section devoted to a single animal and chapters within each section organized by body system.
  • Over 400 photographs and illustrations highlight key concepts such as radiographic interpretation and the main points of diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic techniques.
  • A chapter on ophthalmology provides hard-to-find information on eye care for ferrets, rabbits, rodents, and other small mammals.
  • Coverage of preventive medicine includes basic biology, husbandry, and routine care of the healthy animal.
  • The drug formulary supplies dosage instructions for ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, rats/mice, prairie dogs, hedgehogs, and sugar gliders.
  • Chapter outlines offer at-a-glance overviews of the contents of each chapter.
  • Handy tables and charts make it easy to find key information.

  • Expanded Zoonotic Diseases chapter adds more depth along with the latest information on the rising potential for disease transmission to humans as exotic pets become more popular.
  • Additional surgical procedures for each species are included, some with step-by-step instructions accompanied by color photographs and line drawings.
  • Full-color images show the sometimes minute structures of these small animals and make accurate diagnoses easier, especially for lymphoproliferative diseases of rabbits, endoscopy, cytology, and hematology.

Very Helpful Book
I got this book so I can better understand what the heck the vet was telling me about two of my ferrets. It is a reall good resouce for pet owners to learn more about the different medical conditions that will come up with owning a ferret. However, be warned!.... This book explains thing in terminology that a vet or a vet tech will understand. It is not a book for the average person per se, but it did help me ask the right questions and to be better informed. One vet I talked to uses this book as a reference quite often. I enjoyed going through this book and it was very educational.

A great lesson in friendship and personal discovery
Liz learns a lesson that few adults have managed: what really is important in life and who are your friends. The animal information is up to date and mostly true (the indication that the Fred the ferret is a wild animal is one of the rare goofs), the story moves along quickly, and the characters and circumstances are believable (hey, I live with over 10 ferrets so I know what it's like, and Wallace hit the nail on the head). A great read.

THE BEST BOOK IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE
There is no way to express my feelings about this book. It really changed my attitude about reading. I liked reading a lot; however it made me like reading even more.I can really understand why this book is an award winning book. My favorite characters are Sally and Liz. I like how they are always covering for each other or right by each others side. There is nothing I would change about this book and I give all my thanks to the author, Thank You Bill.

The main characters were Liz but everyone called her lizard Miss Wimberl, Sally, Mrs Jones Mr.Mcdonald, Shane, Lizs Mother, Farther, Jo Donna Hunt and lizs animals Fred and Bessie. I would recommend this book for kids my age and older because it was a terrfic book to read.

FUZZIES!
Owning a ferret is a little like owning a child - they require your full attention and a great deal of time, especially when they're young. When we bought our first ferret, Tycho, my wife and I had already done a little research and so we had some idea of what to expect. We should have done more, however. They're a handful, but ultimately worth it, because most ferrets are not only cute and cuddly, but smarter than most dogs and like cats, genuinely curious in most things in their environment. Before bringing your little carpet shark home it is important to know what you're getting into. Prospective ferret owners should do plenty of research before taking the plunge and buying one or more of the little cuties.E. Lynn Morton's book presents an easy to read yet detailed fact book about fuzzies, basics like nutrition- ferrets are carnivores and cannot handle a vegetarian diet, and even explains proteins and how they can differ depending on the source. Discipline and how it should be...
