After a long search I bought this one..
I looked at this camera the Panasonic hvx200, the sonys, the jvc 200, and even Canon's bigger brother the X1. I found this one to have fantastic reviews on DVinfo.net, a great video forum. My concerns about 24f vs 24p were addressed to my satisfaction- there really isn't a difference. I like tape vs the HVX's expensive storage solutions. One concern I had was, will it look like a pro camera? That is important in some situations where your equipment gives you added credibilty with clients and talent. As soon as I opened the box I was in love! This is a really substantial camera. Especially with the opt wide angle from Canon and the matte box provided, this does not look like your mama's camcorder. I really like the manual controls, so that you don't have to go thru menus to change parameters. The layout of everything is great. I really like the dual on/off and zoom controls- top of handle plus rear right side. Holding the handle for low or medium height shots...

Perfect companion for XL-H1
About 1 year ago I bought an XL-H1 and a Sony HVR-A1U to do work on a documentary. Though the Sony has proved to be a great camera in its own right, it doesn't cut well with the XL-H1, and the image quality in bright light was near as good, in darker settings, things just fell apart. So I bought this camera XH-A1. I thought when I bought the XL-H1 I would end up buying a second when I could afford it, but I found no compelling reason on a couple of counts. (1) Jack pack is wonderful if you are planning to haul around a RAID array and a generator. I'm sure this would be allot of fun for the run a gunner like myself ;-) (sarcasm). Even though I have heard people criticize the HDV format for compression and artifacts not seen as much with the uncompressed format you get from the HD/SDI output.. I personally think maybe its 1 person in a 1000 who could tell the difference in the end (and they might be faking, I can't). This pictures is NOTHING short of Stunning period. (2) I thought...

Going from an HV30 to an XA10
Even coming from the prosumer Canon HV30 camcorder, the professional XA10 is a huge improvement. The camera is easy to hold, the buttons are all in good locations, and the camera just feels easy to use. Compared to some other HD camcorders I used in film school, the XA10 feels much easier to control. The difference is even more dramatic comparing it to my old HV30 rig. It's much nicer to not have the added awkwardness of a battery-powered XLR adapter. Honestly, the XA10 must look much more professional to clients as well. Image quality is simply stunning. There is a slight look of shallow depth of field that is very pleasing to the eye. It's subtle, but noticeable. I've heard it has something to do with the 8-blade iris, but I won't pretend to know what that really means. All I know is the video quality is the best I've personally ever held in my hands. The XA10 also gives much greater control over the image than the more consumer-focused HV20...

XA 10
The good: I'm a backpack videographer. I shoot a lot of industrial and training videos. I grew weary of trying to find an easy way to get great audio from a DSLR - too many additional and unnecessary steps -- so I sold mine and picked this up. Best. Move. Ever. Now, I put a Rode NT3 on a boom, plug into the XLR and my audio is warm as a summer day. Video quality is stunning. Focus assist is fantastic. I'm very pleased to get pro-level processor and lens in a camera this small. Surprise: it shoots great stills too. Very very good in lower light scenarios. Down sides: The cinema mode feels sort of amateurish/consumer level. Not much there you couldn't do better in post, so, I don't use it. My only other complaint is I wish there were a few other on camera buttons to reduce menu diving, but it's really not hard.

The best of both worlds
It is unbelievable how this camera can be so compact, and yet so pro. The removable handle is brilliant! When it's in place you have XLR microphone inputs and audio level controls, and flexibility in shooting angles. When it is removed, it feels just like any consumer mini hand-held camera that you might take on a family outing - yet still has the same video quality! For years I used the semi-pro Canon GL-1. It did a great job (as far as a Standard Definition camera) of allowing pro-quality video to be procured from a smaller device. You can't beat the a larger lens for low-light performance and video quality. It, however, lacked some important features, and manual control that are important for pro video. For example, manual audio control was lacking. To get such features, you needed to move up to a shoulder mounted camera like the XL-1 - which had a great lens, made great video, but wasn't something you would bring to the park with the...

Fabulous. Wonderful. Great!
I love this camera. If you don't have a lot of experience with prosumer cameras (as in my case), the first look may be a bit intimidating (a friend said, "It looks like you're filming tv news"). Especially as I added a Rode shotgun mike (not sure it does anything other than make the sound louder, but...still checking it out). You can't rest the camera on your shoulder, but the image stabilizer helps and the grip and buttons are all well designed and easy to reach. I struggled through the manual, but fortunately bought Dan Curran's dvd about the xh-a1 which appears to be almost identical. This was a -huge- help. I can't recommend it enough if you are at all unsure of what you're looking at. He goes through the simplest things (putting the shoulder strap on) to some very technical settings that you can do. The dvd saved me -so much- learning time and also prevented some careless mistakes (like letting sunlight through the viewfinder). This camera feels like a...

Everything I hoped it would be.
What can I say except this camera is the only one that offers everything you need in this price range. What really sets it apart is the two xlr inputs on the side allowing two microphones to capture sound, and it switchable between external and internal mics, or use both simultaneously. No other camera offers this. Get a lens filter kit and the wide angle and telephoto adapters and you're ready to create anything you can imagine. I recently filmed a music festival using this camera for long shots, close-ups, cutaways, and static shots, everything looks amazing. Love It !!! Love IT !!! Love It !!!
This camera is not for the novice by any means because once you step out of the auto everything mode it can be quite complicated. Now that being said if it wasn't for all the manual settings and adjustments I would not want it anyway. I have a Canon XLH1 and this camera makes the perfect workmate for it. The picture quality is virtually the same so for a two camera shoot it's great. Although it's about half of the weight of it's big brother the XLH1 it's still a little hard to hold steady since you can't rest it on your shoulder but the image stabilization is very helpful. Also the auto focus is very fast and really comes in handy when you have to run and gun so to speak. All in all this is a great camera with a awesome picture and I simply love it.

It's a great product !!!
I would strongly disagree with the one negative review here and say that this is an extremely professional video. I will say it is not in any way a slick talking head movie. In fact, its style, a well integrated mosaic of information keeps it from ever being 'slick.' But anyone will quickly understand that this was put together by someone with an expertise in teaching. And I wholeheartedly agree to some others here have said about lowering the learning curve. For example, this, video actually covers XLR input: from the settings for it to the use and limitations of the phantom power supply. Phantom power isn't even discussed in the other how-to videos I've seen on this camera. Also covered only here, is why you would use a drop or non-drop frame rate. This video, if you haven't guess already, goes out of its way to cover features filmmakers might have need for, for example, there is a demonstration of how the attenuators can be used to reduce too-loud noises like...

I have been screaming for a creative, well constructed video to inspire new motion picture creators on the techniques and the mechanics of digital movie making for years.
