Best in Class
I bought my first Redbook in 1972, and it is still the standard to be matched. I recently got back into coin collecting and naturally I searched for coin price guides on the interwebs... to my surprise, there didn;t seem to be any reliable look-up style websites that provide the detail and accuracy of the Redbook, especially regarding the history of the mintings. I have a worn-out old copper coin that I thought was unidentifiable, and sure enough the Redbook had it listed (turns out to be a 1700s colonial coin from Massachusettes), and it included the history and WHY they were minted. I am amazed that a book like this is still top dog over some internet solution. The spiral binding is GREAT, the book lays flat. The hard cover versions many moons ago didn't, and often the pages would come loose with heavy use.If you need to price US coinage, this is the best 10 bucks you can spend.

a must buy!
Book will tell you everything you need to know about coins. Pictures are included and make coin errors easy to see what you need to look for. Grading info ia also included at the beginning of each section. This book will keep you busy. I now have to tell people to get one of their own, due to them coming to my work to look coins up for them. A very good buy for both pro or amature collectors!

More Up To Date and Complete Listing Of ALL U.S. Coins Unlike the 'Professional Edition'
The most complete listing and guide of United States Coins available anywhere. I purchased the 2012 'Red Book' after ordering the last December when it became available, and much to my surprise, finding out the 'Professional edition' doesn't include a complete listing of all U.S. coins like the standard 'Red Book' does. The 'Professional edition' lacks any information on some series entirely such as modern commemorative coins from 1982 onward, Proof and Mint sets from 1967 onward, which makes the 'Professional Edition' completely useless for anyone researching these items. In addition, the mintage information for new series listings in the standard edition is more up to date than the 'Professional edition' as well. Overall the standard edition 'Red...

$5 for a Penny
Well out of pure curiosity I purchased this penny, and it was as it shows an Indian Head Penny. Mine came as a 1903, it's cool to have. But the $4.99 for shipping was a little funny, you'd think they could just slap on a 45 cent stamp and mail it.

Very Good USA Coin Price Reference Book
The 69th and latest edition of the trusty "Handbook of US Coins" (AKA "The Blue Book") continues to uphold its reputation as THE guide to average dealer buying prices for US coins.Coins are illustrated with sharp B&W photography and prices are listed for several different (but not all) grades. The catalog is well laid out and easy to use.Whether or not your coin dealer will actually pay the prices listed is problematic, since much depends on accurate grading and the elusive quality of "eye appeal", among other factors. The "Blue Book" is the perfect companion for the venerable "A Guide Book of US Coins" (AKA "The Red Book").

Its reverse design features an image of the Hiawatha Belt with 5 arrows bound together, along with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, , HAUDENOSAUNEE and GREAT LAW OF PEACE. The Haudenosaunee Confederation, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy of upstate New York, was remarkable for being founded by 2 historic figures, the Peacemaker and his Onondaga spokesman, Hiawatha, who spent years preaching the need for a league. The Peacemaker sealed the treaty by symbolically burying weapons at the foot of a Great White Pine, or Great Tree of Peace, whose 5-needle clusters stood for the original 5 nations: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca. The Hiawatha Belt is a visual record of the creation of the Haudenosaunee dating back to the early 1400s, with 5 symbols representing the 5 original Nations. The Haudenosaunee symbol, the Great White Pine, is the central figure on the belt, also representing the Onondaga Nation. The four square symbols on the belt represent the Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga and Seneca nations. The bundle of 5 arrows symbolizes strength in unity for the Iroquois Confederacy. Northern European settlers from France, England and the Netherlands interacted with the Haudenosaunee as a separate diplomatic power. Top to learn more

A reader asks several questions about whether it is a better investment to buy regular gold bullion coins, or the ones sold by the U. S. Mint.

How You Will Turn a Profit by Buying Gold Coins From The US Mint In order to profit from buying gold coins you need to do what you would do with any other investment: buy low, sell high. Buying gold coins from the US Mint can be a great investment opportunity, but only if it is done right. Most people do not buy gold coins to make a lot of money. Buying Gold Coins Requires Patience Investing is not an impatient man’s game. That can deter a lot of people from buying gold coins, but experts claim that this demand will get even higher. It is also important that they manage their expectations and understand what they are getting into before they actually start buying gold coins. Buying gold coins can be a great financial move for anybody, as long as they do it properly.

Buying coins is rarely a good investment. As you said, a lot of that depends on the price of precious metals but you do have fixed number of coins and increasing numbers of collectors. I have made a point of collecting American Eagle proof coins since they appeared as well as standard mint sets, proof sets, and certain new issues and commeratives. There’s also the rule of thumb, if an “investment” is advertised on the radio, it’s not a good investment. And trading in metals or commodities is very risky– all it takes is one revolution in Africa and they might dump their metal reserves on the market, kaboom go prices. Buying precious metals should be a very small part of your portfolio. The collctors value of these new coins will depend on how many they produce. The appreciation of coins based on the numismatic value is a gamble at best. The coins you are talking about have collectors value and you pay for that. (Think about it…if gold silver were such “good investments”, why would the folks who sell them be spending SO MUCH MONEY on advertising. You can buy or sell these in a milli second… during trading hours. Part of your portfolio should have a small part in metals. If you must do this buy the appropriate ETF… like GLD or SLV. “Precious” metals are NOT an “investment”. Problem is, the seller wants to make a percentage, at least 20%, so you’re starting out your “investment” 20 to maybe 50% in the hole.

Before you buy U. S. coins, check out the family: you should know the correct weights of the rare coins, and be able to tell if a fake coin is under or overweight. If you intend buying U. S. coins that are Regarded As classics, as seeking the liberty seated dollars, then you will likely find more fakes than genuine coins so make sure they are graded by one of these services. However, if you do not have the time or inclination to learn these things when buying U. S. coins, you should simply purchase nothing that is not certified by the PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) or the NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation). When you buy U. S. coins for your coin collection or to resell at a profit, it is a fascinating activity that can easily get you hooked. You are not expected to be an expert, but at least learn about the higher value coins examined as the Morgan dollar, the Silver Eagle bullion coin and the Double Eagle. Wear has very little effect on the overall weight of a coin, coin and there is no significant difference between the weights of a circulated and a mint. There is an extremely small number of genuine coins where the reeding vivid omitted in error – that so few of omission is almost certainly the sign of a forged coin. There are some others that are so reliable grading services, seeking as SEGS (Sovereign Entities Grading Service) and ANACS (American Numismatic Association Certification Service), each of Which is very good for grading old American coins. If you intend buying U. S. coins seriously, then you should learn as much about them as possible. However, there are several problems you may come across when you buy U. S. coins for collecting or resale, not the least Which is of forgery. 2 Only Buy U. S. coins that are graded.
