Excellent router/firewall for small business
We have a T1 on one Wan port and a Broadband cable modem connection on the other, set to load balance. The router works perfectly and I've seen our throughput increase and maintain stability compared to our Edimax router which this replaces. A nightly FTP push I do used to take anywhere from 8 to 15 minutes. Now it takes 6 minutes and 20-40 seconds - very stable. Firewall blocking is very good, but unfortunately you have to make a rule per wan port. I wish they would include an option to select both wan ports when creating a rule. Also, the new rule appears at the bottom of the list and you have to move it up one-by-one to the top, which is a slow process if you have many rules. This can be overcome by utilizing the command line interface via telnet, although it's cumbersome (fw/rules/lanWan/inbound to get to the section, followed by the move command - all case sensitive). Excellent performance for multi-site small office
Purchased to setup VPN between two offices about 10 miles apart connected via 30down/15Mbps up, Cablevision service.Handles 10 PCs at remote office connected to a Win 2003 server using SQL data base, and transfering 500K pdf files between locations. PDFs open in about 2 sec.Setup is not trivial, and requires some understanding of networking. Negear support was great.Works well with IPsec Router to Router.Configure each Router with Static IPs. Set the LAN subnets to be different at each end. ie, 192.168.1.x at one end and 192.168.0.x at the other.Then run the VPN Wizard, enter your passphrase for encryption, and your done!You can use SSl to connect to each router via a Browser, if you configure user security to enable remote administration. Documentation is fair.

Does everything it's supposed to do
What's more to say - the specifications are clear and if you need a dual-WAN firewall like this one it will do the task admirably. Setup is relatively simple and the failover to the backup WAN - while it can't be instantaneous - is accomplished quickly enough that most users don't notice. We've had up to 30 users hung off one of these and it hust hummed right along.

"SSL VPN - Understanding, evaluating and planning secure, web-based remote access" - the only thing wordy about this book is its title. The rest of the book delivers information clearly and concisely through text, diagrams and examples. "Hacker Bob" animates key passages to keep things from getting dry.As expected, the audience for this book is techies. Basic network concepts are explained, so anyone with a technical background will understand. Any network fundamentals quickly lead to SSL VPN applications.The authors are good about explaining "why" and providing the pros/cons of a decision. Key criteria are also provided for both technical and business decisions. I found one of the most valuable parts to be about bad architectures. The authors illustrate several common architectures and point out weaknesses. The focus on diagrams and flow was quite useful.

Great SOHO VPN Firewall
While ZyXEL may not be that well known in the consumer network gear market, they make some good enterprise level gear. The USG line from ZyXEL is middle ground between simple consumer products and highly configurable enterprise products.I have used the and the (discontinued) 1P for several years without issue; primarily for maintaining an IPSEC VPN tunnel. While the 2 Plus and 1P were more consumer grade, the USG20 is a step beyond. It has a plethora of configuration options available, and wringing out optimal performance from the device is not for the faint of heart. Great product with only one flaw
This is one of the best priced and most feature rich routers I've ever used. I've used sonic walls about 5 years in the past and we had a linksys dual wan router before this. Once we needed more than one external ip the linksys just couldn't cut it. The firewall would either be fully off or fully on with secondary ip's, so we had to find another solution. Having used sonic walls in the past I looked at them first but a price/feature comparison lead me straight to the ZyWall USG100.Setup for the device seems complicated at first, with assigning ip's to machines, ports to groups, and other things that I've not encountered with a firewall before. But these extra steps in the beginning save so much time later on. Instead of having routes and many firewall rules assigned to an ip, you would assign it to a virtual object stored in the zywall which has all of it's information. I bought this router from a competitor but wanted to leave a review here. The amount of features that you get out of this router is unbelievable for the price you pay.
