Insanely deep and easy to use
Crammed with features and sounds, yet easy to use, Reason is a ultra cost-effective tool for musicians interested in adding synth sounds of all kind to their palette. I've barely begun to scratch the surface of this program's functionality, but have nonetheless utilized it quite frequently for recording as well as demoing. In my opinion, a must have for most musicians of any stripe.

Product Description

The Reason rack comes with all the gear you could possibly need: samplers, analog synths, graintable synth, vocoder, mixer, drum machines, arpeggiator, compressors, EQ and effects. With its generous sound bank and intuitive flow, Reason helps you along in your creative process, and never gets in your way. Version 5 adds the mighty Kong Drum Designer, the versatile Dr. Octo Rex loop player, live sampling input, the Blocks pattern based sequencing mode and more.

About Reason

Reason's heart is its virtual rack of instruments and effects. As you create your track, Reason automatically patches and cables your rack. If you want to get deep, simply flip the rack around and route the cables any way you like.

Finding your sound is an important part of the musical process. With Gigabytes of synths, samples, drum kits, and effects, Reason's sound bank is packed with everything you'll need from the start. Want more? Expand your palette with a world of ReFill libraries.

The thing that strikes new Reason users most is how much they get done in a short amount of time. Reason's legendary creative flow keeps you focused on the music — and the fun. At all times.

Need more gear? No problem. Choose a synth, a drum machine, a loop player or any device from the Create menu and it will instantly appear in your rack, logically patched into the signal chain. And because Reason is designed to go easy on your computer, you can repeat the process until you're more than happy.

Each unit in Reason's virtual rack is edited from its own on-screen front panel. All the sliders, knobs, buttons and functions are right in front of you, ready to be tweaked, turned and twisted in absolute real-time. And all your front panel actions — filter adjustments, pitch bending, gain riding or panning — can be recorded and automated in the Reason sequencer.

A single key press will turn Reason's rack around, and there you are, in patch cord heaven. Most audio connections are made automatically. When a new device is created, it appears immediately below the currently selected device, and Reason patches it into the system in the most logical way. Repatch by dragging the patch cord plug to the desired connector to build your own sounds — or tweak the included presets.

New in Reason 5

Dr. Octo Rex Loop Player
The upgraded Dr. Octo Rex loop player loads eight REX loops into one player and lets you switch between them on the fly. This makes arranging a breeze — load the drum loops into one player, the guitars into another and use the sequencer to select what loop to play in a pattern-like fashion. With eight loops to switch between, the new loop player also comes ready for the experimental minded. Set the player to retrig the loops on the beat, on the bar or on the 16th note. Or program the loops manually like in the original rex player. For each of the eight loops, the new rex player also comes with an expanded set of per-slice settings. Set pan, pitch, filter frequency and level, reverse slices, use multiple outputs, create alternating groups of slices and much more. The Reason 5 Factory Sound Bank comes complete with guitar and acoustic drums patches for Dr. Octo Rex and a huge selection of techno, house, club, hip hop and r&b loops from signature sound designers.

Blocks
Many musicians tend to think of music in terms like intro, verse, chorus, breakdown, buildup and so on. With the new Blocks mode in Reason 5 and Record 1.5, your sequencer does too. Blocks lets you sequence your songs using a more pattern-based approach, with the segments of your song as individual building blocks to be laid out in your arrangement. Start by creating the discrete parts of your song in blocks mode. When you are ready to start building your song, just switch back to song mode and draw in what blocks should play in the dedicated pattern lane. Use one block for the verse and one for the chorus — or build your song around a single 8-bar loop. Blocks provide a very fast way of creating a musical structure for your song. But the options don't end there. With the basic arrangement laid out, you can see the contents of the blocks and create variations and mute individual parts, or add further musical elements in song mode. A typical use for Blocks is to create your backing track in blocks and then use the song mode sequencer to record vocals or instrumental performances. For music based around a single looped section, one repeated block with automation and mutes of individual tracks added in song mode makes arranging a breeze. You never have to commit to using either mode — you are free to move back and forth between Blocks and Song mode, and any changes you make in your Blocks will instantly be manifested in all instances of that Block. Need some tambourine on that chorus? Add it, and there will be tambourine whenever the chorus block is playing.

Live Sampling
Remember the time when samples were something you sampled and not loaded from your hard drive? When a sampler was a machine that could record samples, not just play them back. As samplers became software instead of machines, they came to rely on external sample editing software for recording and editing the samples and the art of spur-of-the-moment creative sampling was pretty much lost. Now we are bringing it back to Reason 5 with its live sampling input. All sample players in Reason are now samplers. Just hook up a sound source to the rack's sampling input and you are ready to start sampling. Use a mic, a turntable, an instrument or the entire Reason mix. Sampling in Reason is simple and straightforward. Hit the sample button and Reason starts sampling. Reason will detect the sample start automatically. You can sample when Reason is running too if you like — no need to stop the music. If needed, bring up the built-in sample editor to set start and end points, loop points and more. This is possible for all loaded samples by the way — not only the ones you have sampled. As always, Reason lets you focus on music making — and sampling in this case. All samples are neatly stored in our song file and accessible in the new samples pane in the tool window. Here you can easily see what samples are loaded into what machine and delete and export samples as you wish. Live sampling together with pitch detection of root key and automatic zone mapping makes it dead easy to sample an instrument and map the samples across the keyboard. This way you'll create your own multi-sampled instruments for NN-XT and NN-19 in an instant.

Kong Drum Designer
Analog synthesis, physical modeling, sampling, REX loops, support sound generators, effects, flexible routing, multiple hit types and more. The Kong Drum Designer is not your regular drum module. It's the drum module focused on letting you get exactly that drum sound you're after. Kong has 16 pads and 16 drums. Build your drum sounds based on any of the nine different drum modules. Flavor the sound with 11 support generators and effects. Program automation, create alternating groups and let Reason's powerful sequencer control the beat. Reason 5 ships with a sound bank with a generous supply of kits for Kong across a wide variety of styles.

Complete yet lacking........
Reason is definitely a contender to become one of the best DAW's in the future although it's my belief that there is still things within the package that need work.In it's out-of-the-box state, Reason offers a variety of tools to quickly compose beautiful sounding tracks of any genre of music you'll be into. The included virtual rack should provide enough tools to make the average musicians ideas easily come to life and the sound quality of all the included sounds and effects are beautiful. Where Reason begins to show some weakness is when it comes to integrating 3rd party tools and using sources outside of Reason to create music. I find myself frustrated at times with the products paradoxical ease and difficulty. I attempted to use some VST and VSTi plug-ins and they were unusable in Reason, although they do give you enough in the Reason package to compensate for it's difficuties in this department so I got over it quickly. I also had some issues with Recycle/Dr. Octo-Rex...

Pretty much the standard.
Reason pretty much sets the standard for computer midi synth software, because the interface is easy to understand, and it works pretty well. I bought this because took a class in synths, and this was required. I still use it for projects outside the class, and even though a new version is out, this still gets the job done.

Ditchkins?
Literary critic Terry Eagleton, who is, insofar as I can tell, an atheist himself, nevertheless engages in a nuanced take-down of some of the pretenses associated with contemporary atheism. And he focuses in particular on the two most articulate writers within the neo-atheist movement---Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens. For purposes of convenience (since Dawkins and Hitchens, in numerous instances, offer similar arguments) Eagleton amusingly conflates their names into a singular entity that he calls "Ditchkins."Eagleton sees the neo-atheist movement as a reaction to the resurgence of Islamic and Christian fundamentalism after 9-11, and he sees that reaction as largely obtuse, both intellectually and psychologically. Eagleton, for example, sees real value in the Bible, and in the story of Jesus in particular, and what it can teach us about life and social change. Eagleton's readings of the Ten Commandments and the story of Jesus were especially dazzling, and...

A fascinating read if something has been troubling you about Dawkins and Hitchens
It's astonishing how many people have reviewed this book thinking that's it's a defense of religion, when Eagleton himself is atheist, or agnostic at best. It indicates that not all of us are reading this book as closely as perhaps we should be. Clearly, quite a few of us are predisposed to take offense on behalf of Dawkins and Hitchens, every time Eagleton flourishes his dry British wit. But this is how the British debate: witheringly and dramatically.I'm glad someone is pointing out that Dawkins leaps gleefully into a chasm of hypocrisy by attacking religion's crimes (which are many) while obtusely dismissing how science has enabled us to wreak havoc on one another. Eagleton romps from one end of the book to the other, slaughtering sacred cows, and is clearly enjoying himself.Again, I don't claim to be an expert on textual analysis, but I'm seeing a lot of misfires in the reviews section here. It's a very nuanced style, and sometimes you have to slow down...

Product Description

Terry Eagleton’s witty and polemical Reason, Faith, and Revolution is bound to cause a stir among scientists, theologians, people of faith and people of no faith, as well as general readers eager to understand the God Debate. On the one hand, Eagleton demolishes what he calls the “superstitious” view of God held by most atheists and agnostics and offers in its place a revolutionary account of the Christian Gospel. On the other hand, he launches a stinging assault on the betrayal of this revolution by institutional Christianity.

There is little joy here, then, either for the anti-God brigade—Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens in particular—nor for many conventional believers. Instead, Eagleton offers his own vibrant account of religion and politics in a book that ranges from the Holy Spirit to the recent history of the Middle East, from Thomas Aquinas to the Twin Towers. dissing the "ditchkins"
The atheists Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens have suffered their share of critical reviews, but perhaps none have been as categorical or vociferous as this one from their fellow Brit Terry Eagleton. By some accounts, Eagleton is the most influential literary critic in Britain; by all accounts he is an unreformed intellectual bad boy, and not only for his Marxist socialism. In the present volume he combines his rapier wit, encyclopedic knowledge, and spirited prose to dismiss the "Ditchkins" as pitiful pikers whose ramblings deserve our disdain. True, the "Ditchkins" make some good points. But their sloppy thinking, strident language, and dogmatic condescension are warning signs of an atheism bought "on the cheap." Their stock in trade includes vulgar caricatures of religion, an "abysmally crude [and] infantile version of what theology has traditionally maintained," ignorance, cultural supremacism, an "eminently suburban" love affair with the Enlightenment myth of...

A great upgrade (from 4), but be aware of USB key
I was thrilled with Reason 4, but I held off from upgrading to version 5, because most of the added features from 4 to 5 weren't worth it to me.Luckily, Propellerhead continues to let you upgrade your current registered version of Reason (all the way back to the first version) to the latest version. Hopefully they will maintain this policy.I doubt if anyone held out from version 1 to this latest version, but if they did, they are getting about $1,000 in upgrades for about $150!Anyway, if you are like me and skipped version 5, I can tell you that the upgrade from Reason 4 to Reason 6 is well worth the money. In addition to a wealth of new patches for the core instruments, you also get the Kong drum designer (which was the only thing I wanted from version 5), live recording capability, and three new killer effects modules: Alligator, Pulveriser, and The Echo. For me, Kong and Alligator alone justify the cost of upgrading. Kong is...

Upgrade Goodness
I had an academic version of reason/record duo. This upgrade worked on the reason. It came with another ignition key, so i transferred reason 6 into it, and kept the other key for record. Great software!one thing to make sure tho: if youre used a pirated version of reason 5, make sure you uninstall it, and install the legit version with a legit key. Or everytime you install reason 6 in a new machine, you'll get a warning from propellerhead saying you get three strikes before they cut you off.

Reason 6 is awesome, authentication key sucks
I love Reason and have been using it since version 1.0 and this new version is awesome. The one problem. I have is that you either have to have an authorization key connected via USB plugged in whenever you are using it or authorize online each time you open it up. It may seem small and insignificant but I feel that it is just a pain in the ass. I understand that they are doing it to prevent piracy but it just sucks and makes it more inconvenient to use the program that I paid a lot of money to use. If not for this I would have given 5 stars to this review.

Awesome Interface!
I have been in the market for a new audio interface for the past 6 months or so.I have owned all kinds of audio interfaces over the years(Firewire and USB)Prior to Balance, I have been using a combination of a $400 Firewire I/O and the Built-in on my 13" MBP i7My job allows me to test out most of the audio interfaces available(Apogee, MOTU, NI, M-audio, Presonus, RME). I pretty much had things zeroed in on an Apogee Duet2, the USB one. It provided all the I/O that I needed, sounds amazing, low latency(VERY IMPORTANT!) has a beautiful display, and is the right size,...............but was a little more money than I waned to spend. There are some other things about it as well that I wished were different.....I don't really like the breakout cable connections and most of the controls seem to be controlled in software rather than with dedicated physical knobs and buttons. There is one physical knob that allows me to cycle through controls and make adjustments...

So easy, works like a charm!
Within 15 minutes I was up and running. I have been using REASON since version 1 so I was very excited to see what kind of audio interface they would develop over at Propellerheads. I am not let down at all. What an amazingly intuitive device! The installation was a breeze. I installed Reason Essentials launched the app and BAM! I was off and running. My initial test was with an SM57 Microphone and the sound was great. I then switched to the guitar/bass input and my bass sounded great as well. It was so much fun to finally hear my voice run through all the insanely creative effects in REASON in real time. I messed around with BALANCE in Reason Essentials for a little while but as a user of the full blown version of the software ( I'm now using REASON 6.0 ) I launched the full version of the software and Balance was there in the audio preferences as an available device. I was off to the races. ( it wasn't clear in the provided materials if users of the full version of REASON needed to...

Balance: Sexy Design matches Performance
I've been working with Balance for the past month or two, and I have to say I'm incredibly surprised with the versatility and performance behind this sleek box. Balance provides an unmatched sleekness in design that has eliminated my need to fumble with cords around the back of my computer. What's even better is how easy it is to move it from my studio computer to my laptop when I'm on the go and get the same level of performance on the go (this was great for when I spent a month with the family around the holidays). But with simplicity also comes options. For my larger projects I have the option to route any thing through the direct monitoring (slave computers with sample libraries to stick with Reason's superior DAW? I think so!). This was an unexpected pleasure.I was also pleasantly surprised when I connected my condenser mic directly into Balance and bypassed my usual pre-amp box for a live radio interview - the quality was superb and I had no issues finding...

Truly a "Must Have"
I have never used Propllerhead Software, and yet it seemed with every lesson I came up with a new idea for a song. This book goes into minute detail on many aspects of the Reason 6 instruments and effects. From opening an empty rack to characterizing a sound, making it have the exact tone you desire. If you are looking for a well capable and yet affordable program buy Reason 6. But purchasing it without this book would be a waste of time.I dont know if there is a revised version of this book, but some of the arrows are not pointing at the proper button in 2 or 3 different figures. Other than that it is well worth the money.

Nothing Short of Amazing
I've had reason since Version 5. Coming from FL Studio (which is just as difficult) i was flabbergasted by the reason interface. There were knobs and buttons and wires everywhere and i had no idea what they do.After picking up this book a lot has been demystified(the interface, the mixer, the instruments, the effects). I now have better knowledge of what they do and how i can apply them to my sessions.I've only had this book for 3 days but i am already on chapter six!vAs soon as i finish one chapter i can't wait for the next one.I will definitely be placing an order for so i can learn even more. this will be my go to DAW now.
