I'm a dictionary convert
This new American dictionary from Oxford is fantastic. I have the American Hertitage that came out a few years ago and I was pleased with it--it was an up-to-date version of the dictionaries I've always had. But when I received this dictionary I was astounded. For the first time I'm using my dictionary for more than a simple spell check. First of all, it lists the most common use of the word as the first definition. This seems so logical it's bizarre that other dictionaries don't do it. I no longer have to browse through archaic or niche uses of a word simply because they predate the most common. It creates a whole new level of clarity. On top of this, the pronunciation system is extremely easy to use and the layout is clean and straight forward. It has the feel of a classic (illustrations and drawings only when it informs a word, none of those do-dads, distractions, and unnecessary photos that make other dictionaries look cheap but the makers think will make it look more...

The Best One-Volume Dictionary Ever?
--- This, probably, is the one to buy. But decide for yourself...--- The New Oxford American Dictionary (NOAD) may be regarded as the American translation of the New Oxford English Dictionary (NODE), published in England in 1998. A great many definitions are word-for-word identical between the two works. However, NOAD introduces significant improvements.--- For example, NODE omits pronunciations for "ordinary, everyday" words, and as a result you get no hint as to whether "corgi" rhymes with "orgy" or "Porgie". NOAD provides pronunciations for all words, using a more sensible respelling. Furthermore, entries contain raised dots to separate syllables. Unfortunately, the dots are more prominent than the hyphens, which are mere flyspecks in both dictionaries even though that is precisely the sort of information a user might need.--- NODE has no illustrations, which are abundant in NOAD. The crude maps are close to useless, and...

What a dictionary ought to be!
The large size of the Oxford American Dictionary, the high-quality paper, illustrations, and font all present an aura that beckons the reader in. The logical arrangement of the senses and sub-senses are so much easier to use that this effort will surely set a new standard in dictionaries. The older format, that of plowing through numerous entries that are seemingly unconnected, is doomed to fall by the wayside, and not a moment too soon. Older dictionaries lack the intuitive usefulness developed by the team that assembled this most excellent dictionary. Having the Oxford English Dictionary, a Merriam-Webster, and an older Webster, there is no question for us that for day-to-day use, and for the times when one needs to more fully develop very specific idea, this work will become the one that most will rely on. Those who desire exactitude will be pleased, and those who are "looking" will be drawn in, perhaps farther than they intended to be. A superior product that is long,...

Product Description

As Oxford's flagship American dictionary, the New Oxford American Dictionary sets the standard of excellence for lexicography in this country. With more than 350,000 words, phrases, and senses, hundreds of explanatory notes, and more than a thousand illustrations, this dictionary provides the most comprehensive and accurate coverage of American English available.

The dictionary draws on the two-billion-word Oxford English Corpus and the unrivaled citation files of the world-renowned Oxford English Dictionary to provide the most accurate and richly descriptive picture of American English ever offered in any dictionary. The Third Edition offers a thoroughly updated text, with revisions throughout and approximately 2,000 new words, phrases, and meanings. Many new words relate to fast-moving areas such as computing, technology, current affairs, and ecology, while others have recently entered the popular lexicon. Usage notes have been updated in light of the most recent Corpus evidence, and a completely new in-text feature on Word Trends charts usage for rapidly changing words and phrases such as carbon, mobile, or tweet. In addition, the volume has an attractive, modern new text design that makes entries easier to read and find.

One of the hallmarks of the New Oxford American Dictionary is the way it reflects the living language. Unlike in more traditional dictionaries, where meanings are ordered chronologically according to the history of the language, each entry plainly shows the principal meaning or meanings of the word, organized by importance in today's English. Thus readers can be confident that the first definition they see is the one most likely to be used by people today, and is not a sense that has been obsolete for two centuries.

Offering clear, authoritative, and precise information, with the in-depth and up-to-date coverage that users need and expect, the New Oxford American Dictionary is the benchmark by which all other American dictionaries are measured. Top to learn more

Very good
I am a graduate student in NYC. Not a native speaker of English. The reason I bought this dictionary is because I felt tired with searching internet for some usage of a phrase or a slang. This dictionary is handy and really informative - it includes many frequently used phrases, and also provides some examples for explanation. Very good for me.

Surprisingly good.
I have this dictionary, along with the M-W Collegiate (8th ed.), the American Heritage Dictionary (4th ed.), and an American Heritage Desk Dictionary, along with a number of pocket dictionaries. This Pocket Oxford American Dictionary has a surprising number of definitions. I've found words in this dictionary that aren't in my M-W or A-H Desk Dictionary, and the definitions are clear and concise. It also has lots of usage notes that are easy to understand and are very helpful. This is a great dictionary, regardless of cost, and it's nice that it's reasonably portable as well. I highly recommend it.

Has no roots
This is a wonderful dictionary for the price. The reason I gave it 4 stars, it has no roots. You have no idea if the word is from Latin,or Old English.

THE single volume English dictionary
Precise, comprehensive, meticulous, rich: for extent and scope - the only single volume dictionary of English to own (namely, for those seeking a non-American English dictionary (in practice, a non-Merriam-Webster work)).Editors Catherine Soanes and Angus Stevenson have revised and updated the pioneering work of Judy Pearsall (Editor) and Patrick Hanks (Chief Editor, Current English Dictionaries) who led production of the outstanding `The New Oxford Dictionary of English' in 1998.This revision builds upon that body of work - adding 3,000 fresh words, senses and phrases. The editors and their team drew upon a new 100 million word Oxford English corpus. As with the 1998 dictionary, it focuses its definitions on current usage. What gives this indispensable breadth and depth is its layout of core senses and subsenses within each definition and the provision of word history: etymology (word origin) and morphology (word form) as well as reference to...

Customer Review

Well, what did you expect--it's an Oxford!
Not surprisingly, I found this dictionary to have everything I needed--and more! The book is larger than I expected, but then I should have known that "compact" means something different for Oxford than it does for other dictionary publishers (some of whom publish dictionaries with the type so small, I can hardly read them). Oxford uses a typeset with lots of white space which, of course, makes it much easier to read. In addition to the words, the tutorial on "Effective Writing for College and Career" makes this dictionary one that professors can use to prepare students for the rigors of college and business writing. All in all, if you want a compact (by Oxford standards) dictionary of the highest quality, get this edition. You can't lose!

Linguistic marvel
I found this pocket dictionary a remarkable synonoym guide, and given its small size, it can effortlessly be carried in a backpack to and from school, e.g. during an exam. This was one of my ultimately most successful purchases.

Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus
I purchase this dictionary because it has the combination of a dictionary and thesaurus combined. But I was a little disappointed with this dictionary because there were words that I needed defining that were not listed, which I happened to find those definitions on-line. On the other hand, there are words that you cannot find in the dictionary on-line that this dictionary has, so if you use both you should be okay. Other than that, this book is lightweight and easy to carry for studying, tabbed, and the descriptions are very legible with a large font that is easy to read without straining your eyes.

Latest version is incredible - - Its not the old OPD ! ! !
There was a time when I wasn't very impressed by the Oxford Picture Dictionary, especially compared to the WORD BY WORD Picture Dictionary. As an English teacher I used to get free copies of it, but I'd actually go out and buy other versions because it wasn't as topical as Word By Word. Suddenly however, they seem to have caught on. My students LOVE this latest version (which has a black not blue cover and is much thicker.) In smaller less structured classes, I'll actually let them pick out chapters then base the grammar lesson I was going to teach on that theme and topic, that way insuring personal relevence. It also helps keep the classes in English... dictionaries can be valuable tools, but often they keep students from communicating with each other - - they sort of burry their heads in the dictionaries and the safety of their own langauge, but with the latest version of the Oxford Picture Dictionary, I'll find students of different nationalities hudling over the book, trying...

Oxfords From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up. This revised edition is based on the 1979 edition and The Oxford Dictionary of Modern Quotations (1991). The first such dictionary, as compiled by Oxford, was published in 1953, and its been tweaking, modifying, and updating it ever since. It contains 17,500 quotations from 2500 authors, including more non-English writers, thinkers, and public figures than previous Oxford collections, and provides more substantial representation of American figures, more quotes from non-literary... Theres Woody Allen on immortality ("I dont want to achieve immortality through my work--I want to achieve it through not dying") and Fred Allen on committees ("A group of men who individually can do nothing but as a group decide that nothing can... Despite all of this, the focus is strongly British, e. g. , 10 pages devoted to Samuel Johnson, 171 to Shakespeare, while Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson get about a page each, and that wonderful quotable Cervantes, less than a page. " There are pages of special categories, such as one of advertising slogans ("Let your fingers do the walking," "Its finger-licking good," and "Beanz meanz Heinz") and three pages of last words ("God will pardon me, it is His trade," from... The Oxfords closest contender may be the 16th edition of Bartletts Familiar Quotations (Little, Brown, 1992), that The quotations are arranged alphabetically, by author, so browsing provides insight into the authors quoted, more so than do compendiums that are organize by theme.

The middle of dictionary includes a business correspondence section with sample business letters, resumes, email vocabulary and other handy business correspondence references. This dictionary would be most beneficial to those who use Spanish in a professional capacity, advanced learners of Spanish and those who simply want to speak correctly using proper business terms at all times in Spanish.

The only other dictionary I have that I like even remotely as much is the "Kenkyushas New College Japanese-English Dictionary (4th edition)" which I bought in Japan. The "How to use this dictionary" section in the beginning has perhaps the worlds best chart for converting conjugated verbs back to their dictionary form. I only wish that Oxford would make an expanded Japanese Dictionary. This is the dictionary I use the most. All verbs are followed If youre trying to write Japanese for a pen pal, translating Japanese from your textbook, or studying Japanese alone and need a vocabulary, this book will be invaluable. It doesnt have as many words as other dictionaries, but the ability to look up words by the hiragana and katakana in the order they appear in Japanese is just so natural after youve learned the basics. All Japanese entries are in Japanese syllabic script (kana), and followed by their kanji character if they have one.

The dictionary itself, which is based on the Concise Oxford Dictionary (8th ed. ), offers 3000 new words and senses but at times gives obtuse definitions. Finally, this is a British English dictionary, not a U. S. English dictionary. From Library Journal According to the preface, this is "a fully integrated reference book" that offers a "greater depth of information than is normal in a dictionary. Recommended only for academic and public libraries looking for an updated British English dictionary. I only bought this dictionary because David Foster Wallace constantly raves about the "OED", which is a full (and expensive) twenty volume set.
