Great instrument.
Although the instrument is not as set up as one might need to start playing, it is a quality OM and very good for the money. There are no "guarantee" documents or instructions on how to set up the bridge and intone the scale length, so it is assumed you have other sources to know how to begin using the instrument. You might want to google setting up a mandolin bridge. [...] The strings are already attached and horribly corroded which means most likely the mando has been sitting for quite some time. As soon as you set up the bridge, your fingers will turn black from the corrosion. No problem, buy some new strings when you purchase it and change them asap. Meanwhile the tone should yield a nice range of highs and lows and provide a satisfied feeling of playability. The case is not the greatest quality (the inside compartment cover is not hinged all that well) however it works for protection and fits perfectly. Remember...

Very Pleased With The Instrument
I'll be brief: great price, excellent instrument! I'm a musician in the band Sugar Bayou, and needed this octo-mando for recording purposes. Easy set-up (although I didn't really know it would arrive without the bridge in place, had I thought it through, I wouldn't have been surprised). I will certainly go to this vendor first in the future. Thanks!

Sounds Great
I purchased this GM-6 Mandolin after hearing it played on the Gold Tone website. I am very happy with it. I can't figure out why there aren't any other six string mandolins being made by other companies.

Well-made
Properly speaking it's an octave guitar (an octave higher than standard guitar tuning) with a mandolin body. Well made, even and smooth sides to the frets, sounds good. String tension is high, but this possibly is one of the sources of the proper tone. Doesn't sound exactly like a mandolin but it's in the infield -- well more than in the ballpark. For guitarists it's a play-right-now instrument which is fun. If, like me, your hands are kinda large for a real mandolin it will take a little practice, but it rewards the effort.

Great Intro to Octave Mandolin
This book is great if you have picked up an octave mandolin as a 2nd or 3rd instrument. It helps you explore OM techniques (accompaniment especially) thru songs. This is not a lesson book, it is a song book that explores different OM playing styles. The CD is well recorded and good to listen to on its own. The only instrument on the CD is an OM. Melody in the left channel, accompaniment in the right.

Product Description

Twenty tunes in styles from Irish to American, in a variety of tunings, melody and accompaniment, presented in standard notation and tablature, with a stereo CD (left channel melody, right channel accompaniment). Left and right hand techniques and chord voicings are thoroughly discussed. For the first time, the Celtic style "woven texture" accompaniment unique to the instrument is fully notated. Unique to the book are melodic Irish ornamentation, blues, jazz, American fiddle tunes with variations and improvisations (all fully notated), and a chapter "Breaking Away From Block Chords" extending knowledge of the fingerboard. Good, but Challenging
I'd recommend this book highly for the more advanced player. I've been working on "Hickey's Reel" (possibly the easiest piece in the book) and I'm finding the melody portion to be a real boot camp for learning ornamentation. The accompaniment is somewhat easier and offers some much more interesting alternatives to just strumming or playing arpeggios. The arrangements sometimes call for very wide stretches or other fingerings that are physically more difficult than seems necessary, so I've found myself rewriting some of them into something that's musically similar, but easier on the hand. This probably would be less of an issue for someone with larger hands or a smaller instrument. The accompanying CD is enjoyable for listening, but not as friendly as a learning tool as it might be. The tunes are played a bit too fast for anyone who's still learning to play them, and there's no slowed down version. Also, there's no count-off, so you'll just have to jump in as best you can if...

has good info, but is for really advanced players
its a nice book and has lots of great info about an instrument that most people have no idea about. has great alt tunings, rhythm patterns, and picking patterns. the problem with it is it is for really advanced players. the tabs and songs are intense, to say the least

Great set of strings
I haven't been able to find much choice for octave mandolin strings, so I gave these a try. As with most strings they sound tinny at first until they are broken in (1 to 2 days of playing an hour or so seemed to be enough to me.) They sound great on my Weber Absaroka, crisp and clean. It seems like I hear more of a distinction between various playing styles than I did with my old set. (e.g. playing with a pick, strumming with fingers, plucking, etc...) Also, they stay in tune. I would have to tune my old set quite often, but these are very close to perfect every time I pick up my instrument. Again, this may just be new strings vs. old strings, but without any comparison (no other choices), it don't have any problems with these what-so-ever and are very happy with them.

Great tutorial for mandolin and octave mandolin beginners
Although the title says "bouzouki" actually this DVD is a tutorial for mandolin and octave mandolin. Tim O' Brien is great, the songs in the DVD are awesome and it is a pleasure to learn them. In my very personal opinion, the best tutorial for octave nmandolin in the market.

Product Description

Tim O’Brien’s artistry is unique, crossing boundaries between bluegrass, old time, Irish, country and folk music styles. His heartfelt singing, instrumental virtuosity and profound songwriting have put him at the very pinnacle of today’s acoustic performers.

Tim O’Brien’s course will be a boon to mandolin and bouzouki (octave mandolin) players who want to improve their technique, develop ideas and learn new repertoire. Whether he’s breaking down an Irish slip jig, an old time mountain ballad, a bluegrass tune or an original country/pop song, Tim brings his brilliant musicianship and formidable technique to bear, making these pieces fun and enlightening for learning players.

The tunes and techniques that Tim teaches can be played on either instrument. Switching between mandolin and bouzouki (they are tuned to the same notes one octave apart), he demonstrates right and left hand techniques and the advantages of each for soloing, song accompaniment and how to get the most out of their respective textures and tonalities.

Each song or instrumental that Tim teaches will bring you greater facility on your instrument. They include "Down in a Willow Garden," "The High Road," "Lay Down Your Weary Tune," "One Girl Cried," "More Love," "The Kid on the Mountain" and "Travelers."

Note: Even if you don’t have a bouzouki, there’s plenty of material on this lesson to keep mandolinists busy for a long time! Top to learn more

“The Blues” appears to be a simple structure or format, but it is made elegant by the endless improvisational possibilities it inspires, and by the blues scale, originating in African music, a chromatic scale with a lowered third and seventh,... That he was playing up until his death in 1939 allowed me the fantasy that this could actually Be his guitar, and even though I knew how unlikely that was, no one could really dispute it. Recently, using the ever increasing resources of the web, I... I started buying the old classic recordings, often in anthology form, lacking a good record store that would have carried albums by individual blues artists. Bukka White stunned me with his originality, , you can hear influences of traditional work songs and some songs lean a little toward traditional blues. There is a banner decal at the top of the peghead that reads, “Only a Gibson Is Good Enough,” and it turns out that Gibson only used that decal on the L-00 in 1941 and 1942. Years later, the mystique was embellished by seeing one of the few known pictures of Robert Johnson, playing what appeared to be a guitar identical to mine. But no one who plays the blues will dispute that Robert Johnson, in his short, mysterious career, established himself as the King.
