A must have for fans of traditional RPG's
DISCLAIMER: I bought both NWN2 and the expansion pack, Mask of the Betrayer, at the same time and installed them both, so my review reflects changes that were implemented with the expansion pack but still available in the original campaign.I'm probably in the minority of gamers in that I never really liked the original NeverWinter Nights. I loved the concept of a game that allowed you to create your own campaigns and play online, but I got really turned off by the single character with henchmen aspect. NWN2 has fixed this with a more traditional 4 character party system.I am running it on the following system:AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 1 GB Ram (Single Channel), GeoForce 7600 GS 256MB DDR3. So my system is nice, but by no means state of the art! A great RPG and amazing game making program
Neverwinter Nights 2 is an amazing game inside and out built upon the success of Neverwinter Nights. Almost like a rebuild of Neverwinter Nights as opposed to an entirely new game, it harnesses the best of both worlds: the new technology and graphics of a fresh game with the refinement and built up content of an expansion. The end result is a game unlike any other to date and a virtually endless source of entertainment for RPG/Dungeons and Dragons fans. There are basically two sides of this coin to address, the single player campaigns which are the core draw and the game making program which spans out into online multiplayer.There are three campaigns in three expansions included in this package. The original campaign, while having the certain wobbly flavor of a first run with a new system, is rather enjoyable. Only 20 dollars for all this?
In this package you get the game with all of the latest patches and updates (e: after downloading them through the auto-downloader) and the two expansions, "Mask of the Betrayer" and "Storm of Zehir." You also get a tool-set but I haven't bothered with it yet. Unfortunately I'm late to the series, but I've played Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 recently (for the first time!...after enjoying Dragon Age: Origins) and this seems right up my alley. Before updating I ran into the Sunken Flagon bug which is a game-breaker. After updating the issue was fixed and I only encountered the occasional graphical hic-up. Not too bad considering the complaints with the original release of this title.You don't need to register online or be online at all to enjoy the singe-player experience, however, you will want to update through the game to get the latest patches/updates. You can do it yourself but doing it through the game is MUCH less of a headache. Updating does require an internet connection...

Best D&D RPG for the PC??
Well... I just got my hands on a copy of this during the holidays.. after waiting and waiting... You see.. Neverwinter Nights was hands down my favorite PC game...but I could not get the sequel.. my old 2800+ would not take it... with that being said...is this game.. the game that dethrones Neverwinter Nights... is it a worthy follow up?? Well...Let's look at the pluses and minuses.+ Unlike the original Neverwinter... this opens up subraces.. so if you pick say Dwarf.. you have a choice of Gold Dwarf, Shield Dwarf, and Grey Dwarf.- Sometimes there is no differences between the sub races... still it is about customizability so in actuality this is only a minor complaint.+ The HD Graphics are awesome- They max out at 1024X 706 Res...+ Once this game gets up and going it is quite addicting.. and as magical as Neverwinter Nights 1- Unlike Neverwinter Nights 1... this does not have said magic right from the get go...

Additional things that may help after purchase for better enjoyment.
Since I have played these games numerous times on multiple operating systems (XP/ XPx64, Vista and 7)(bought each individually) I found it might be helpful to know certain things ahead of time prior to purchase:1. In order to to play the original Neverwinter Nights Campaigns on the later versions of windows you need to insure that you have the latest "critical rebuild" patch available from bioware (a few hundred MBs)and you should run the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2, more than likely in game cut screens will not work.If you do not have game version 1.69 or later versions of Windows will block the program due to "known compatibilty issues", You may also need to download older versions of the .NET Framework and "override" them if windows asks you about software compatibility.2. Make sure to install all expansion packs for NWN2 prior to playing and you must run the update patch prior to installing mysteries of westgate. The reason for this is...

I understand that having the PC expansion work on the Mac is a disincentive to folks buying the Mac versions of the expansions. Choose your alignment, your allies, your companions, and how you want your character to develop… design the character you want, role-play the way you want, and carry the battle to the enemy. Many Mac gamers I know were thrilled to buy the PC versions of the expansions for the original NWN and manually install them, then to re-purchase them for the Mac when they were available. I am glad that similar measures exist for the NWN2 expansions – but wish they had released them for the Mac so I could have rewarded the developers. Choose your Alignment, Allies, and Enemies – Design the character you want, role-play the way you want, and carry the battle to the enemy. Most say they would have done the same for NWN2 – I know I certainly would. If you do not have or want to use Windows but you do have the Windows versions of NWN2, such as the NWN2 Platinum discs or NWN2 Gold + SoZ discs or NWN2 OC, MotB, and SoZ discs, then it is possible to install from the NWN2 discs directly into a... While it is possible to get the expansions installed you either have to rip the appropriate files from the Windows DVDs or install NWN2 for Windows and the expansions on a Windows partition or VM and then copy the required files over to Mac OS X.... Those are the only two options for running the Mac version of NWN2, but it is possible to run the Windows version of NWN2 on the Mac as well using a variety of technologies. If you purchase the disc versions (separately or NWN2 Platinum) then you will need to use the Update feature to apply the patches to get to version 1. The limitations of this are that it requires the DVD both to install AND to play, it does not include the NWN2 Toolset, it does not include the expansions (MotB and SoZ), and there is no built-in update feature for patching. If you have access to a decent version of Windows (Windows XP or Windows 7) and a DVD drive you can install those on a Bootcamp partition on your Mac and use either Bootcamp or Parallels (I have done both) to play the game.
