It's On Like Donkey Kong
I don't normally write a review before I've beaten a game but after several hours of play I've got to say Donkey Kong Country Returns is grand. I've been playing it since the midnight release. Where do I start? It's like slipping on an old glove. I didn't even have to read the manual. The graphics are gorgeous, the controls are great and for once the motion controls didn't feel like a gimmicky addition. Rare just got owned! Many hours of my misspent youth involved playing Donkey Kong Country on the SNES, whether alone or with a friend, I remember playing that silly Mine Cart Madness level until I had it memorized. All I can say is the people at Retro Studios must've loved DKC like many of us because they just knocked it out of the park with this one. They took everything I loved about the first DKC; barrel craziness, lots of enemies, easy and accurate controls, and beautiful scenery; and magnified these things by a factor of 100. This is just the kind of sequel I've been...

Is it a good return?
I always make sure I play a game all the way through before a leave a review about it since many games grow on me over time, and some games are very exciting for a week until you realize the replay value is non existent. Many of the reviews for this game and others are given on release day or the next day! Leaving a hasty assessment of the game. It was a difficult journey but I have finally completed the game and can give it a fair and honest review. To get 2 things out of the way before I start the review I want to say that this review is coming from a game developer and very looooong time fan of the Donkey Kong Country series. Needless to say I was extremely excited when I heard the announcement of this title at E3 and it became my most anticipated game of the year. I was also very pleased to hear that the game would be developed by retro studios who are held in very high regard with their Metroid prime series. But has the Return been a good one?For the most...

Gameplay

Like earlier Donkey Kong Country games, Donkey Kong Country Returns is a side-scrolling platformer, but although the game contains classic references, as well as levels and activities reminiscent of earlier games in the series, it is far from a remake. In fact, Donkey Kong Country Returns stands very much on its own not only in its nearly 3D status, but also in its new visual treatment and control scheme. The game features the familiar team of Donkey Kong and his little buddy Diddy Kong. The goal is make your way across Donkey Kong Island collecting bananas and search for hidden items as you swing on vines, ride mine carts and more as you avoid the variety of enemies and situations set against you. New silhouette graphical treatment of both game heroes and enemies in certain levels also introduces new challenges, as players must perform all actions from within an entirely new perspective. The game also features the players choice of either the Wii Remote/Nunchuk controller configuration, or a sideways oriented Wii Remote. In addition to simple navigation and jumping movements, the Wii Remote also allows for a variety of other actions, including: ground pounds, rolls and even air blowing with simple, yet timed shaking of the remote.

In addition, the game also contains fun and user-friendly co-op functionality. In co-op mode players take on the role of either Donkey Kong or Diddy. Both characters have abilities of their own, but work together. Beyond this the game takes possibilities for cooperation even further, especially with players of different skill levels, as Diddy can if need be simply rest on Donkey Kong's shoulder and let him do all the work at times. In the event of death, either character can also be revived by the other by hitting a Donkey Kong barrel within the game. The game also continues the series' use of additional animal friends such as Rambi the Rhino, who can serve as a battering ram and can be ridden in certain areas of the game.

Key Game Features

  • Retro Studios faithfully restores everything that made the original series great, from barrel cannons to mine carts, and then builds on those elements with stunning graphics and new layers of depth to the world and game play. The game offers the traditional side-scrolling experience everyone loved, but with levels created in fully rendered 3D environments.
  • Diddy Kong joins the quest. With his trusty backpack, he can produce a jet pack or Peanut Pop Guns to give Donkey Kong more abilities.
  • For the first time ever, the franchise features the ability for two people to play together at the same time - one as Donkey Kong, one as Diddy Kong. Players can navigate the levels separately or as one unit. Diddy Kong can ride on Donkey Kong's back and hop off whenever he pleases, allowing novice players to ride on Donkey Kong's back through more challenging areas of the game.*
  • Hidden items, puzzle pieces and other surprises are found all through the jungle. Spell out K-O-N-G by the end of each level to earn an extra bonus.
  • Motion controls give players a real feeling of control. Players move Donkey Kong using the Control Stick on the Nunchuk controller and can shake the Wii Remote controller to make Donkey Kong slap the ground.
  • Vibrant colors, beautiful graphics and fun characters draw players in. Even people who have never played a Donkey Kong game before can pick up a controller and start collecting loads of bananas.
  • Every level offers new fun and new challenges. Sometimes Donkey Kong is running through the jungle, sometimes his action takes place on a tropical beach and other times he must become a master of timing as he jumps chasms in a mine cart.

Donkey Kong is back!
This is a quick review without my nostalgia goggles:Pros:+ Amazing gameplay: The controls are really smooth and although you are only limited to the "wii remote" and "with nunchuck" controls, the game plays flawlessly, specially with the nunchuck.+ Incredible level design: Most levels are very clever, they are a step ahead of you and I always liked that, specially coming from a DK game. I really love the fact that this element was left intact.+ Challenging: Veteran gamers of DK games will not be disappointed. The game packs a somewhat high difficulty almost similar to the originals. However, you now have to get hit twice before you die (or 4 times if you have Diddy). And even with this new "life system" the game will manage to make you lose. Casual gamers should not get scared though, the game offers a vast amount of extra lives and an item that increases the amount of hits DK can receive. One warning though, stay away from the extra levels located...

Mario Vs DK has still got class!
As soon as i saw this game i had to get it. After having played through Mario vs DK 94', Mario vs DK Advance, and Mario vs DK 2: March of the minis i pretty much knew what i was in for. Lots of brain teaseing puzzles that start off easy and get pretty challenging. Then some special hard levels you can unlock with real skill. There is a good amount of play and some challenge for those just looking to see the main story levels. But for those like myself who want to 100% the game it gets pretty damn challeging. In this game they do trophys for beating the high score instead of stars. But in order to get even close to the high score you have to collect every coin, letter card, and mario coin in each level as well as beat them quickly. Unlike in Mario Vs DK 2 you can't directly control the minis anymore. Speed, timing, and planning ahead now play an even bigger role.I'm very happy with this purchase and hope anyone else who gets it feels the same. Thanks Nintendo!

Mini Marios Mean Maximum Fun

At the grand opening of Mario's new theme park, where Pauline is a special guest, the first 100 guests will receive a mini Pauline toy. Donkey Kong is the 101st guest to arrive. Instead of walking away empty handed, he grabs Pauline and heads into the park. Now Mario must rescue Pauline by guiding Mini Marios through over 200 new action-puzzle levels filled with traps set by Donkey Kong. Grab your stylus and place girders to cross pits, build conveyor belts, set springs, or even place warp pipes to solve these puzzling levels. Mario VS. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem! is the latest installment in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong franchise and offers plenty of new challenges for new players and fans alike.

Gameplay

Like the earlier Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, in Mario vs. Donkey: Kong Mini-Land Mayhem! players primarily use miniature toy versions of Mario to do his bidding against Donkey Kong. These are released at the beginning of each level and can't be stopped once unleashed. Levels are laid out in a traditional 2D platformer fashion, some of which pit you against Donkey Kong while others feature toy flunkies of Donkey Kong. The player's goal is to facilitate the Mini Mario's march toward the endpoint of each level. Along the way the player can manipulate the environment with the DS stylus and deal with enemies faced via a variety of objects including: springs that will propel Mini Marios into the air, tap rivets that when connected can create a girder bridge over a span, familiar Nintendo warp pipes which lead to other game areas and more. Nintendo coins are also collected along the way to earn points. The game also features unlockable mini-games, a wealth of park attractions and an automatic help mode option that will offer help when a player fails to beat a level after several attempts.

Level Creation and Sharing

Although Mario vs. Donkey: Kong Mini-Land Mayhem! is a single player game it allows for significant interaction with other players via its robust level creation and sharing functionality. Within the 'Construction Zone' area players can utilize a level building tutorial, create levels, view levels submitted by up to 30 friends and even participate in contests regarding submitted levels. The built-in level editor is simple to use, allowing the player to manipulate a variety of object types, once these have been found in the main game, in virtually any way imaginable. Once level variables have been set the player can utilize play-test functionality to determine whether they want to keep the finished product. From there levels can be shared with others, who can further edit them if they so choose.

Key Game Features

  • Use your stylus to strategically place items and solve different puzzles. Once you tap the Mini Marios, be ready to react quickly to help guide them safely to the exit.
  • With an intuitive interface, players of any experience level will be able to enjoy the action. Players can access the in-game Help Mode that lets you get more information on key items. Additionally, if players get stuck trying to solve a level, they can now use the new Mini Guide to demonstrate a possible solution.
  • Feeling creative? Construct your own levels in the 'Construction Zone' with an easy-to-use level building tool. You are also able to share your new levels with friends over local wireless or post them online using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
  • Access new levels created by fellow users with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Store up to 160 additional puzzles to always take the action with you, wherever you go.
  • Participate in the all-new Challenge Mode where you will create a level based on certain criteria. Players can vote for their favorites and the top rated levels will be announced.
  • The new Mini Pauline toy has been added to the roster of familiar toys in the series (Mini Mario, Mini Toad, Mini Princess and Mini Donkey Kong).

An extremely fun and mind bending game!
Mario, Donkey Kong and Nintendo have long since gone hand-in-hand, from the very beginning of gaming. With this latest twist on these mainstay characters, in Mario vs. Donkey Kong Mini-Land Mayhem, gamers are introduced to a rather unique experience and twist to the norm. In Mini-Land Mayhem, there is no jumping, head bopping or ball throwing from Mario, as we have come to expect from this little red overall-dressed man. Instead, there are conveyor belts to be built, warp pipes to travel and girders to place, among other nifty travel techniques to build and use.Players must use their skills and wits, in this puzzle-based game, to construct paths which correctly guide mini wind-up Marios through different scenes and levels to reach doors to move on to the next stage/level. With this being said, players must react quickly because once the mini Marios are set to action, girders must be zapped and replaced in other areas before the Marios fall onto spikes and meet their doom...

Mario vs. Donkey Kong Returns
It's a fun and creative puzzle game. I initially felt it was a little on the easy side, only to realize that there is a bunch of unlockable content. That definitely increased the replay value. It's addicting and each completed level leaves you wanting to rush to the next, or to collect all items and complete all achievements before advancing. The mini-Marios (and others) march non-stop lemming-style and it's your job to guide them to the correct goal by use of certain tools in your arsenal, such as girdles, ladders, conveyor belts, springs, and pipes. Time is not on your side as you try to avoid enemies and gaps on your way to the goal. It'll take good timing and good decision-making in order to complete each puzzle-infused level. In addition to the main levels of gameplay, there are special levels and special modes that can be unlocked. Fun and innovative gameplay and some great nostalgic music makes me glad I bought this game.

A classic game -- one of the best ever!
Before this game came out in the 90's I remember seeing a video about it. I knew I had to have it, and bought it immediately upon release. The graphics were absolutely stunning, and are even pretty good by today's standards. The storyline was great and the characters instant classics. And so when I got my Wii one of the first things I did was download this game--one of the best I've ever played in over 20 years of gaming.Needless to say this excellent game has stood the test of time. It is side-scrolling--pre 3-D--but that is one of the game's strengths in my opinion. There are some incredibly difficult levels (the mine cars are very tough), but the game is not impossible to beat and provides just enough challenge to really absorb you in it. Control is fairly simple but another plus--you don't need a whole slew of button combos to master this game, just some dexterity and practice.I would recommend this game either on the Super NES or as a virtual game...

One of the most revolutionary games of the 16-bit era
Now a blockbuster in making great platformers for Nintendo, Rare's biggest breakthrough was with this game, Donkey Kong Country. In ways, Donkey Kong Country is a lot like Super Mario World. Like Super Mario World, in Donkey Kong Country, the main ways to defeat enemies are by jumping on top of them and throwing things at them. Just like Mario and Luigi love to collect coins, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong love collecting bananas, since they are monkeys.King K. Rool, a huge alligator, has stolen all the bananas from the Kongs' Banana Hoard. So it's up to Donkey Kong and his friend Diddy Kong to try and track down King K. Rool and defeat him in order to get their mounds of bananas back. But it won't be so easy because along the way, there are several dangerous enemies that they'll have to look out for such as Kremlings, vultures, beavers, bees with a mean stinger, octopusses, and tons of others.Fortunately for the Kongs, they do have a few friends on their side. The most famous...

Super Nintendo's last breath
When someone insults a next-generation video game's graphics with something like, "It could have easily been done on SNES," she or he may not remember Donkey Kong Country. Even on on X-Box, GameCube, PS2, or that Phantom thingy, the graphics on this baby are no insult. The CG resolution is crystal-clear and the animation in unparalelled. The rain fits perfectly and the transition of weather is flawless. The music isn't bad either . . . it's great, from Funky Kong's theme and the water stages to Candy's lovable romance beat and the final battle with King K. Rool. Both graphics and sound really push the SNES to its limits. As for the gameplay, that's great too. The difficulty can challenge and even frustrate you, but you'll be coming back for more. If I have to say anything bad about the game, Dixie Kong is not here yet and there are no digitized voices. There are grunts and cries, but no actual words.

Kong is the ultimate King!
Oh my! I can't believe how great this game is! I love Mario 64, and Banjo Kazooie is a definate favorite, but I think That DK 64 is going to be my all time most cherished 3-D Platformer. "WE HAVE A WINNER"!
I'm sure you've read all the maligned reviews against Donkey Kong 64; now, here's a worthwhile opinion. First of all, this is probably the hardest and most frustrating platform game I have ever enjoyed. Several of the mini games had me shouting obscenities throughout the entire gameplay. There are gamers who complain about the repetetiveness of DK64--I don't think so. Yes, some of the mini games and bosses do repeat themselves, but they get more difficult as the game progresses. For instance, some mini games may add more challenge by limiting the amount of time you have to complete the given task and increasing the amount of enemies per level. Don't be fooled by people who swear this game is sooo easy. If you like fun and challenging platform games, then Donkey Kong 64 is the perfect choice. Remember, this is by no means a Mario 64 clone. DK64 is definitely one of the best games on the N64 system. My only reason for giving it 4 stars is the often troublesome camera...

Frustrating, But a Lot of Fun
For me, DK64 was worth the price of the Nintendo 64. Don't get me wrong, I'm not totally happy. Gameplay is extremely frustrating at times (I have yet to master a sadistic bonus game known as "Beaver Bother"), and forced camera angles during portions of the game seem to have been deliberately designed to make play even harder (such as the overhead view in a "collect the coins while swimming" mini-game).Overall though, Donkey Kong 64 is a lot of fun, if you give it a chance. Graphics are colorful and absorbing (though not much better than its Super Nintendo predecessors), and gameplay is addictive. I'm going through the game for the fourth time now, just to see how much time can be shaved off before completion. This isn't a shoot-em-up, thrill-a-minute title. Exploring, collecting, and puzzle solving is involved. Enemies must be defeated, but not every five seconds. Each Kong has a different weapon to dispense with baddies when needed, using such offbeat ammo as...

Entertaining and definitely a work out.
Nintendo has come along way with this product. Its enjoyable and addicting. In the beginning you might question why they incoporated a screen shot suggesting that if you are tired take a break. After about thirty minutes of playing this game, you'll want to take a break and rest a bit. Not to fear though, if you like the quest aspect, you will be anxious to get the controls back into your hands. I am definitely impressed and feel that Nintendo is on track with raising the heartrate. Yeah Nintendo, kudos.

The DK Beat Is Back
There is no question about the Nintendo Wii, and the appeal it has brought to so many gamers everywhere. With the success of Wii smashes like Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports and Excitebots: Trick Racing, gamers are finding new ways to have fun. But, Nintendo has also brought that into play with the Gamecube games as well. Many gamers have either easily forgotten how great these titles were then and didn't get that chance, or just chhose other game systems like the Playstation 2 or original Xbox or Xbox 360 titles. Surprisingly, many Wii owners have also forgotten that the Wii does play Gamecube titles as well like Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker and Luigi's Mansion too. But, Nintendo has decided recently to re-release some of these Gamecube greats' with new play controls. They've done that with Mario Power Tennis recently, and now with another Gamecube classic that simply says the DK beat is back.Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, one of Nintendo's most classic and entertaining classic...

We love this game! I remember playing Donkey Kong from my childhood and bought it at Christmas when we purchased our Wii. I purchased the new Super Mario Brothers, another throwback to my childhood, and have barely played it compared to the amount of time I have spent playing this game. My 3 year old asks me to play it just so he can see the "bad guys" and cheers me on the whole game. With the wii controls, you will also break a sweat playing this game.
