Purchased for preschool
I purchase these every year for my preschool class.Tips:1. You do need a habitat for them after they are in their chrysalises. Many habitats come with a certificate for live larvae. This product is just the larvae (caterpillars). It comes with a cup with food in it for them until the make their chrysalis.2. Once they make their chrysalis, you need to move them to the actual habitat, which is usually a pop up house made from a netting material. The easiest thing to do is just take the lid from the cup that this comes with (since they attach themselves to the lid) and hook it into your habitat. The dried food (and poop) is disgusting, but by just moving the lid, you don't need to touch the disgusting part.3. It usually takes them 2-3 weeks to turn into a butterfly.4. It comes with several caterpillars because they don't all survive. Although I've never had all of the five caterpillars turn into butterflies, I've always had at least three... Top to learn more

Great learning experience!
A friend of ours had given us their old butterfly habitat, all we needed to do was order some larvae. I found that Amazon had a decent price on them so we placed the order. They arrived a few days later and the kids were so excited. We took photos everyday to document their growth. It was surprising to see how quickly they grew! Within a couple of weeks they were ready to be placed in the habitat. Another week or so later we were pleasantly surprised to see that ALL five larvae had been transformed into beautiful painted lady butterflies! Overall a great product and the kid's really enjoyed watching the process from start to finish. Great learning experience! Top to learn more

best birthday gift EVER
We ordered this through amazon instead of the insect lore website so that we could get free/fast shipping. They actually arrived very quickly, a day before their habitat did. UPS just left them sitting on my door step but they were fine. We got 5 live caterpillars and 4 made it to be butterflies! We are very pleased with the experience, my 7yr old was in heaven:) FYI getting the chrysalises into the habitat was pretty gross. Top to learn more

So fun I Bought My Own!
I bought one of these last year for my nieces. I also got one for me, and I'm in my 30's. I waited until the spring time to send in my caterpillar certificate. They came in their own little container with just enough food. So you don't need to feed them anything. I tried to put some real food such as leaves from the plants they like to eat in the wild, but they preferred the food that came with them. I think I received 6 caterpillars and they all turned into butterflies. I let them go a day or two after they emerged. Kids are completely fascinated by the process from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. One word of caution, it may not be the best thing to get for Christmas since you may have to wait until spring to get your caterpillars. They will send them in the winter, but I didn't want the butterflies to die on me or freeze to death if I let them go.

Even the Big Guy likes it
We set up a Butterfly Garden for the kids and, as you've probably already read by others' reviews, they loved it. What surprised me most was how intrigued I found *myself* by it. All 5 caterpillars grew remarkably quickly, and all five emerged as loveable butterflies - the surprise was how I caught myself calling the kids over to look and running when they called me to take a peek at them. They were the best pets I ever had for a month! No muss, no fuss - and what a great experience, even for the he-man, butterfly-poo-pooin' dad.

Live Caterpillars Mailed Directly to You The Butterfly Garden comes with a coupon to send away for five caterpillars. The caterpillars are hatched from eggs in a butterfly nursery and mailed to your home in a special clear container, complete with caterpillar food.
Live caterpillars and food
Keeping the caterpillars out of direct sunlight, children can watch them eat, grow, and after seven to ten days, form their chrysalides and begin their transformation into butterflies. The transformation from caterpillar to butterfly normally takes two to three weeks: seven to ten days in caterpillar stage, and seven to ten days in chrysalis stage. Insect Lore guarantees that at least three of the five caterpillars you receive will grow into adult butterflies.
Observe the Metamorphosis Up Close The Butterfly Garden comes with a pop-up butterfly observation habitat, which is a cylindrical mesh container measuring 12 inches tall. Once the caterpillars become chrysalides, they can be transferred to the habitat, where they will complete their transformation into adult Painted Lady butterflies. Children will be excited to keep a close eye on the changing chrysalides and watch this seemingly magical metamorphosis.
Your Very Own Butterflies Once the butterflies emerge, children can have lots of fun feeding them and watching them eat. The kit comes with a dropper for squeezing sugar water into the habitat for the butterflies to drink. It is recommended that flowers be placed in the habitat for the butterflies to rest on while they enjoy their meals. Kids will delight in observing the butterflies unfurl their proboscises to suck up the sugar water.
If you receive your butterflies during warmer weather, when temperatures are above 55 degrees, you can experience the excitement of releasing the butterflies into the wild. Caterpillars are available for delivery year-round, so if yours arrive in a colder month, you can keep your fully-grown butterflies in the mesh habitat for their lifespan, which is about two to four weeks.
Additional mail-in certificates are available for order, so once you've released your butterflies, you can reuse the Butterfly Garden and experience the magic of metamorphosis again and again.
What's in the Box Mesh butterfly habitat, feeding dropper, activity guide, complete instructions, and mail-in coupon for five caterpillars, and food.
Did you know that painted ladies (the butterflies, that is) taste with their feet and have 10,000eyes? You and your kids will be fascinated by all you learn about these beautiful creatures with the Butterfly Garden from Insect Lore. The kit comes with a relatively easy-to-assemble observation chamber; supplies for feeding the butterflies (you provide only sugar and water); an informative booklet of clear instructions and butterfly facts; and a certificate for three to five free painted lady caterpillars. The metamorphosis from larva to butterfly takes about three weeks from when you receive the caterpillar larvae (which arrive in a small container with all the nutrients they need). Your children can watch the larvae increase dramatically in size, form chrysalides, and finally emerge into full-fledged painted ladies (it's suggested that they release the butterflies after a few days of observation). This would make a wonderful activity for families with kids of any age, but younger children will need help assembling the observation chamber and reading the instruction booklet. (Note: The manufacturer recommends that butterflies should not be set free in temperatures lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.) --Rachel RadwayTop to learn more

Wonderful--Raise generations of butterflies!
My son (age 5) got this from his grandparents for Christmas and it has been terrific fun for all of us. The first set of ten caterpillars grew visibly day-by-day, then pupated and emerged as butterflies in a few weeks. There is a lot of great information about painted lady and other butterfly species online and having this project got my son very interested in how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly so soon I found myself showing him multi-colored pictures of imaginal discs (the larval structures that produce the butterfly wing, leg etc. during metamorphosis) online at websites I found--a great way to get him interested in developmental biology. The first time we talked about this he decided they were actually "magical discs", given what these groups of cells can do...the whole process has been very entertaining for the whole family.... It is also really fun to have butterflies flitting around and caterpillars growing in the pavilion in the kitchen when it is gray and wintery... Top to learn more

What a fantastic experience!
Raising butterflies with the Butterfly Pavilion was an experience that my kids and I will never forget. I'm a single parent trying to raise two young kids on my own. I'm busy and don't have much time to take them outside to experience nature. I wanted to give them something that would nurture their respect of nature. Boy did I pick the right item. We mailed our free certificate and about 10 days later, we received our caterpillars. Within about 7 days, they changed into chrysalides. We waited about a week, then suddenly, the butterflies started hatching. In fact, we got to see 4 of them come out within about 30 minutes of each other. It was the most fantastic experience. We kept the butterflies inside the netted habitat for about 5 days, then released them outside. My little 4-year-old girl cried as she had to free her "butterfries", but understood why it was important to do so. We'll never forget this experience and highly recommend the Butterfly Pavilion to everyone. Top to learn more

Amazing Miracle of Nature
I bought the Butterfly Pavilion for my grandchildren so we could watch butterfly metamorphosis together. It was very easy. We mailed the free certificate and about a week later we got our caterpillars with their special food. We watched our critters every day grow and eat. After they formed their chrysalids (or cocoons) we put them into the Butterfly Pavilion and waited for them to hatch. About 8 days later, they started coming out one-by-one. My youngest grandson (5 yrs.) was the first to witness the birth. "Nana, Nana, come see our 'butterfrys'". It was the most amazing experience. We let them go later and all had a good cry. I'd recommend this fine product to anyone! Top to learn more

It's perfect to use when "growing" butterflies in class!
I use this book every year when we do our butterfly unit in the spring. What's wonderful about it is that it not only teaches the kids all they need to know, but it's set in a classroom. So my students really relate to it. I've used it with every class I've taught from K-3. When I have the budget I buy a copy for every child and they take it home as a souvenir at the end of the unit. THE Book to accompany Butterfly Houses, Pavillions
We got this book in addition to a home "Butterfly Pavillion" by InsectLore. It prepared my son and us for what to expect as the Painted Lady Butterflies were developing through each stage. So even during the lulls in the action, we could spark some anticipation. Which heightened the whole process for my 5 year old.We also found out this book is used at his kindergarten for their butterfly learning. This is the first Let's-Read-And-Find-Out book we've bought and were impressed enough to want to get the other books in the series. Where did the caterpillar go?
It seems to have disappeared, but it hasn't. It has turned into a butterfly! From the time a caterpillar first hatches, it eats so fast that its skin can't keep up. It sheds its skin several times as it grows bigger and bigger. Eventually it forms a shell around itself called a chrysalis. Nothing seems to happen for a long time. But then one day the chrysalis splits open, and a beautiful butterfly emerges. What a magical metamorphosis!

Beautiful color
I bought this puppet for a children's church skit. It is really pretty and the color is nice. It was a little smaller than I had anticipated, so we ended up using it as decoration. If you intend to use the puppet for closer interaction with your audience, the size would be fine. It would be a perfect puppet for children to use for their own puppet shows! Top to learn more
Eric Carle Rocks!
My niece is expecting in March 2011 and they are doing the nursery in the Eric Carle designs. As a puppeteer I decided to start them off with the butterfly, my personal favorite. I told them to plan on all the puppets as when I saw this one I fell in love. The picture just does not do it justice. I told them that when Annabella was old enough that I would teach her how to puppeteer. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this! I may have to but one for me. Top to learn more

Attach it to the car seat, activity mat, exersaucer...
We love this crinkle toy. They pull a tag it crinkles, they squish it and it crinkles, they poke it and yes it crinkles. This butterfly gave our twins instant smiles from the start. We now attach this toy to our car seats so that they have a toy to play with while we're out. Top to learn more

Baby's first toy and still a favorite.
I highly recommend this toy especially for a baby's first. As soon as i discovered that my baby learned that she can control her pudgy little hands, I tried giving her a bunch of different toys, but this by far was the best. It is colorful and stimulating and and all she has to to is touch it to be rewarded with a crinkly noise! It can also be hooked anywhere - like her swing or car seat. and she loves this toy still at 8 months. ( she loves anything that crinkles but plastic bags and newspapers are a no no!) I was also able to wash it in the washing machine and it still looked brand new. Top to learn more

What to do if you find yourself with dozens of hungry caterpillars and no milkweed for them to feast on. If you don’t have access to milkweed in the wild nor from fellow gardeners, your best bet is to call local nurseries and ask if they have... She brought the plants home and moved 200 caterpillars to the robust plants. And most plant shoppers won’t buy plants with bugs on them. Milkweed plants are an ecosystem unto themselves and attract aphids, milkweed beetles, milkweed bugs, various flies and wasps. Will they find nearby plants to eat or start eating the stems of the plant. I have a great number of monarch caterpillars on the milkweed plants in my garden, more than I have ever seen. Supposedly Dursban dissipates in 10-14 days, but in the meantime is readily absorbed into the plant tissue and anything that eats the plant. ”I went to my favorite nursery to buy more milkweed and left the new, full plants next to the eaten up ones,” Singleton wrote in an email. Upon leaving town for vacation, she stocked up on milkweed for the hungry Monarch caterpillars she was leaving behind. That means the plants you purchase for caterpillar food must be free of systematic pesticides. Wendy Meyer, co-manager of Shades of Green was very apologetic about the incident and said that unbeknownst to Shades of Green, the grower had used the pesticide Dursban ( chlorpyrifos ) on the milkweed plants.
A butterfly is continuing to grow from self and today seeks to like others with the love he's while a caterpillar continues to be trying to be loved by others. However when you have sufficient belief in God you already know He'll help you stay protected from individuals feelings that plague you or that will prevent you from growing in to the butterfly you had been intended to be. The fearful and insecure... My low self-esteem stored me residing in a cocoon bound with a web of deceit that stored me from growing in to the beautiful butterfly I had been designed to become. Whether it's via a weakness or fear, a caterpillar must liberate from what's holding him back by recognizing he is able to be a butterfly. It's just like a caterpillar that eventually metamorphosis (develops) right into a beautiful butterfly. Loving Yourself: Are You Currently A Caterpillar Or Perhaps A Butterfly. Regrettably, many caterpillars don't know they be capable of become seeing stars and thus stay in their cocoon until they die out. Emerge from hiding whatever you caterpillars in become free seeing stars. I encourage you to leave your cocoon and be the butterfly you had been designed to become. But not every one of God's creation will end up an attractive butterfly. A butterfly is free of charge in the vices of self.
The caterpillars will arrive in a clear container and include all the food needed so the children can experience feeding and caring for the caterpillars. The nursery hatches butterfly eggs directly so you are assured of at least three of the caterpillars will turn into beautiful painted lady butterflies. The Insect Lore kit will include the butterfly’s habitat and a coupon to send away for your live caterpillars. It takes about seven to ten days before the caterpillars form their protective covering or enter their Chrysalis stage.
