Great product(s).Everything came as listed and they all have a quality feel to them. Good Starter Kit
I just brewed my first 5 gallons of beer with this kit. It has everything you need besides a pot to boil the wort. The pressure activated bottling attachment makes the bottling process a breeze and all the bottles end up having a really consistent fill. I would recommend "The Complete Joy of Home Brewing" to go along with it instead of using the directions this kit comes with. The book breaks the brewing process down into easy to follow steps for the beginner and contains a lot of useful information ranging from the history of home brewing to advanced brewing techniques.

Best price for (almost) everything needed.
I decided to get into homebrewing after expecting to pay hundreds for equipment. The local homebrew store had decent kits, but this was almost half the price of those! I ended up getting a kit for myself and a kit for the father-in-law.The kit came in a nice box that was perfect for wrapping as a gift. It had everything listed and everything seems high quality, it even came with a small homebrew beginners book that should be enough to get you to make the first batch, however I would eventually recommend buying 'The Complete Joy of Homebrewing' as most homebrewers consider it the bible of brewing. I have just bottled my first batch of beer and everything worked great, now I have to stare at it for 2-3 more weeks as it conditions. To the reviewer who said the carboy is only 5 gallons, I have 5 gallon plastic carboys for my fishtank and this is noticably larger, however I have not been able to accurately measure it.People wishing to get into this hobby should know...

must have for home wine or beer making!
These are simple (and very affordable!), effective, and amazingly convenient for making your own wine at home. Note that you MUST also purchase stoppers with holes if you don't already have them. (They really ought to be sold together to save on shipping!)I was having trouble making cherry and blackberry wines because of the fruit being pushed by the bubbles up into the balloons, causing them to tip over and spill syrup all over the place. A few days into fermenting, I switched my balloons out for these along with "Drilled Rubber Stopper (Carboy Bung Sets of 3)", and have been incredibly happy! No more spills, just little bubbles and clean airlocks & bungs!If you're using a plastic milk-gallon jug, you probably should fill the airlock with vodka instead of water, since when you pick up and set down (or even push in on the sides)the milk jug, water can get sucked through the airlock down into the fermenter. Simple, cheap, and works well!
This style of airlock is far superior to the "s" shape airlocks for one major reason. It is pretty much impossible for contaminated or "outside" air or fluid to make it past this airlock and into your fermenter. With the older style "s" locks, it was just too easy for the fluid acting as a barrier between the clean fermenter and the "bugs" in the outside air to be sucked backwards into the fermenter, thus exposing your beer to contamination.Get a few of these and you won't regret it!

Great little gadget. Filled it with vodka as per another reviewer.I drilled a hole in the lid of my Mr. Beer fermenters so I could glue these in and they would have a proper airlock.

Its a necessity!!!
This is the basic model hydrometer that comes with almost every homebrew starter kit. It is cheap and it works very well. The only major drawback is that it is incredibly fragile. One must be very careful when washing and sanitizing this because one slip or tap against the sink and this will crack or outright break into little pieces! That being said, it is plenty accurate enough for any skill level of homebrewing and cheap enough that replacing a broken one doesn't hurt too badly.Don't try to brew beer without a hydrometer!!!

This is for Beer and Wine ONLY.
I didn't see any indication that this was for beer or Wine only. I didn't know until I got it in the mail. I was hoping it was a full scale one that would let me test any proof for spirits and silly me for assuming that because it doesn't specify its proof range that it would work for this. It only measures up to 1.16 or about 20% Approximate Potential Alcohol by Volume. I guess I will gift it to my buddy who brews beer.

Works for OG reading just not for FG.
Overall this is a great deal. It was the cheapest I could find. I homebrew, had a gift card, and figured I would give the gadget a try. Shipping was insanely fast. I received it within two days of placing my order. The overall quality is good. Comes with a plastic case to store it, a small screwdriver, and a small plastic dropper.I have a hydrometer and take readings frequently. I used the refactometer and hydrometer on a couple of different brews and the Opening gravity is usually dead on, but when you read the Final gravity that is a different story.For example I took reading using both the hydrometer and the refactometer for OG. They came out the same or with a .001 difference. Although when I took the FG reading the refactometer gave me a FG of 1.001. I used several different calculators and spreadsheets online and they gave me approximately the same readings.I knew it wasn't right so I took a reading with my hydrometer and it gave a reading of...

caps were well bottle caps
These are the first bottle caps I have used, they arrived quickly and to my limited knowledge worked just fine, I did find out though you do not need these unless you plan to store your beverage for a very long time, just regular caps will work fine for home brews that you will consume withing a few weeks of bottling.the only one neg and I do not think it was the caps is they didn't work on green bottles that come from Holland, or it was my capper?

perfect for home winemaking
These specialized stoppers (with a hole for an air-valve) work equally well whether you are using 3-gallon glass jugs, or simple spring water "milk jug" like plastic gallon jugs from the grocery store. They fit either application perfectly.They are conveniently sold in sets of 3 just like the airlocks (which I HIGHLY recommend to go with them- so much cleaner than the balloon-over-the-top method which left me with syrup and fruit going up into the balloon and all over my counter!).These were amazingly effective when used together with "3 Piece Plastic Airlock (Sold in sets of 3)", and together, they did not coast much more than the baggie of balloons that they were replacing! I give them my HIGHEST recommendation for any home-brew or home wine-maker who would like a cleaner method of sealing their vessels to keep the sticky stuff and CO2 in and the oxygen out. (P.S. Simply perfect!
These stoppers are well made (a little nervous given the price) with no molding defects or flash. They seal well wet or dry, and seem to work on openings from #6 to #8. A 3/8" syphon hose fits through for blow-off with no additional adapter needed.The only con I noticed is the surface that contacts the beer at high krausen has stained after one batch.

This is a drilled tapered rubber bung for a better seal and holds the airlock securely in place. A curved lip stops the bung from accidentally falling into the carboy. One Gallon Jugs
Just an FYI that you CAN use these for your one gallon jugs. I was a little worried at first, but simply run hot water over them for a little while and they'll fit. Leave them on for an hour or two after heating them and that you'll have no problem using them since they'll take a proper form for the jugs. They are airtight, nicely made. They will last longer than the drilled plastic caps that frequently broke for me when tightened. Great buy in the three pack if you've priced bungs/caps online.
