Teacher's Grade: A-
I'm going into my 13th year teaching second grade, and I'm always on the lookout for new books that will appeal to my reluctant readers and get them excited to read. The Curse of the Bologna Sandwich is just that kind of book. With funny pictures, action-packed chapters, and lots of references to underwear and other silly things, the kids in my class will be fighting to get ahold of this book. If there were a Newbury Award given to books for drawing in new readers, this book would be a finalist.

The Cure for Relunctant Readers!
I read to my 8-year-old son every night, and Melvin Beederman is the first character who has my child begging for more reading time. He loves these books! We've read the entire series now and enjoyed every minute - my child even wants to reread them all. If your son hates to read, or thinks most books are boring, you will be thrilled with the Melvin Beederman series. These books are funny, engaging and appealing to boys, but they are not crude. (Moms and dads will actually enjoy reading these books out loud.) Highly recommended for relunctant readers!

New Superhero

As an orphan who was left on the steps of the Academy, Melvin doesn't have a family to go home to -- or a house to live in. His cape gets mixed up with someone else's temporarily, but he ends up with a new partner to help him with his crime patrols. Unfortunately, he also ends up falling victim to the nefarious plans of the evil, all-around bad guy McNasty Brothers, who have learned Melvin's secret weakness from an unofficial Melvin Beederman website. Can Melvin overcome the bad guys? Will he save the day? Readers have to turn the pages to find out!The...

Beyond the Stratosphere
I've loved Domenico Modugno's original, light and jazzy version for years. I love the romantic words, flying, then dancing in the infinite sky and dancing then returning to your blue eyes. When I heard Luciano Pavarotti's version, conducted by Henry Mancini, it almost about had me flying in the sky with him.As the greatest tenor, Pavarotti's version is powerful and dramatic and emotionally charged. The lyrics are different, "sweet music played only for me", "I think a dream like this will never return to me again".He doesn't sing the "returning to your eyes blue as the sky". It's still a treasure. I feel strong energy whenever I listen to this version. When he sings "penso che un sogno cosi non ritorni mai piu", it's a sad prediction sung as only he could.I join the skeptics when remembering Luciano Pavarotti singing with Bono and Michael Jackson, He wasn't trained for pop or rock. This is a very simple,...

Product Description

Stage and television director Werner Herzog, one of the most highly acclaimed German film makers, joins forces with the great Italian conductor Riccardo Chailly to effect a masterful rendition of this rarely-performed opera involving spectacular scenes of alternating light and dark, pageantry and intimacy. Very good singing
This opera doesn't have a lot of action but it does have great tunes - one after another, and this makes a nice audio recording to listen to over and over. Susan Dunn is an exceptional soprano with a beautiful, powerful, flexible voice - what more could one ask for? Vincenzo La Scola is a good silvery-toned tenor with reliable high notes. Bruson's singing is touching as always. Dunn and La Scola are more of your 'stand and deliver'-type singers - not great actors, so with the lack of action in the opera, I do not give the video a full five stars.

A very good performance of a rarely heard opera
Although Giovanna d'arco is not one of Verdi's best operas, it is very enjoyable, especially for opera lovers who want to go beyond the standard operas we hear all the time. This was very well performed and recorded. My only real complaint is that it did not have a synopsis of the opera. For a little known opera such as this, a synopsis would be very helpful for following the story.

Vivid if Germanic 'Giovanna d'Arco' from Bologna.
The Teatro Communale presents a well sung 'Giovanna d'Arco' ably conducted by Riccardo Chailly. Susan Dunn sings sytringly in the title part ably seconded by Vincenzo La Scola who sings mellifluously as Carlo. Renato Bruson as Giacomo Giovanna's father easily carries home the gold medal for his singing and acting. Herzog's production is very germanic in style so that scenically the opera seems more wagnerian than verdian. Please can this production be issued on DVD a.s.a.p.

Before the Invasion of the "Frankly Phlegmatic" ...
... check that! "Franco-Flemish" (but actually Burgundian) polyphonists of the 15th C, the city-states of northern Italy sustained a thriving distinctive musical culture, evolved from the Ars Nova of France but livelier, less arcane, more sensual than its French models. The Trecento (1300s) Italian composers used a 'black' notation system that would not survive the importation, by Dufay and others, of the northern "white" note system. The miniscule surviving repertoire, surely less than half a percent of what was lost, is found in a handful of manuscripts, particularly the elaborately illuminated Squarcialupi Codex. The words they set were primarily in vernacular Italian, and the themes of their texts were love, the pleasures of the senses, and the virtues of their patrons. Their instruments, which we know almost exclusively from iconography, were small and sweet: recorder flutes, portative organs, rebecs and vielles (bowed strings), small harps and lutes played with plectra, and...
