Breathtaking scenes and new revelations about China's environmental efforts
This is one of the best documentaries about China today. It shows the diverse topography, flora, and fauna of the most geographically and ethnically diverse countries in the world. It also focuses on the little known and long-standing efforts by China to preserve it's environment, delicate ecological systems and unique animal life. The photography is breathtaking and the extra effort to show rarely seen areas of China are amazing. I have traveled all over China and this documentary shows the land as it truly is. For people who would like a glimpse into this remarkable land and it's people, this documentary is an excellent choice.

Good Narration
I have to agree with the previous reviewer that said: "It also focuses on the little known and long-standing efforts by China to preserve it's environment, delicate ecological systems and unique animal life." There's an example, in almost every episode, of conservation by the Chinese people, and this is not new. One of my favorites is the scene of Chinese people riding some distances on their bicycles with their birdcages strapped behind them, so they could hang all the little cages on trees so the birds could all talk to each other and not be lonely. Just recently, in the big earthquake (not this morning's, the one before) one of China's famous Giant Pandas 'Mau Mau' died when a wall collapsed on her. The keepers cried at her grave and she had a real funeral. While there is nothing quite so dramatic in this series, it is nice to see this side of the Chinese people at least alluded to.Not mentioned in the last few reviews is the wonderful narration provided by Bernard Hill...

Wild China - Only to see is to believe.
This is truly an incredible documentary. I knew that there were both marvelous animals and picturesque natural beauty in China, but never like this. Each episode [8 in total, viewing time of 377 minutes]makes you gape in awe at both the vastly diverse environments, animals and human tribes that make China their home.

Product Description

An exotic fusion of natural history and Oriental adventure, "Wild China" is a series of journeys through four startlingly different landscapes, each based around the travels of a real historical character. With splendour, scale and romance, Wild China lifts the veil on the world's most enigmatic and magnificent country, delving into its vibrant habitats to reveal a land of unbelievable natural complexity. Journey across China from the glittering peaks of the Himalayas to the barren steppe, the sub-Arctic to the tropical islands, through deserts both searingly hot and mind-numbingly cold and see, in pioneering images, a dazzling array of mysterious, beautiful, wild and rare creatures. Top to learn more

Beautifully filmed and soothingly narrated by Bernard Hill (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Wild China takes an expansive look at the fourth largest country in the world. Over a period of more than six hours, the miniseries--which was co-produced by the BBC and China's CTV--lets viewers into a world that is straddling the line between modern-day efficiency and old world traditions. Fans accustomed to travelogues with personable hosts such as quirky Anthony Bourdain or perky Samantha Brown leading them through far away places may get a little bored with the hands-off approach here. But the beauty of this production is in the country and the people, and the way the filmmakers present them in crisply edited vignettes. We see the jumping spiders atop Mount Everest, the winding grace of the Great Wall, and of course some shy pandas that many people equate with China. But some of the best moments are the simple ones--children in a classroom, fishermen working the waters, and monks meditating in monasteries. As did the Planet Earth series, Wild China makes viewers wish they were there. The film doesn't touch heavily on the politics of China, but it isn't lacking because of the omission. As it is, Wild China ends all too soon, leaving viewers longing for more for a country that once didn't welcome foreigners in. --Jae-Ha Kim Top to learn more

A Wonder of a Documentary
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. The narration is excellent and enhances the experience of seeing breathtaking scenery from around the world. On my 17 inch laptop the sound and picture quality were first rate. What's nice is that the pace of the film is just right for holding one's interest, never dwelling too long on one topic and moving smoothly from one continent to the other. Highly recommended for fans of nature and fascinating documentaries.

Great scenic values and enjoyable narration by Attenborough
We both found this a very enjoyable aerial view of the greatest sights on our planet together with an education review of the geology and geography by the BBC's David Attenborough. He is an excellent narrator and the script is interesting without being too detailed. Some elements were completely unique such as the rapid tides in Australia. The image quality was fairly good on our 6MB AT&T DSL system connection.

Plays everything the others won't!
I got this media player elsewhere locally, before Amazon dropped their price. Anyway, the GUI is fine. It's easily navigable, not cluttered at all, presented in a beautiful package, and certainly easy to read. All pluses there. The first videos I attempted to play were 720p mkv files over wireless network (on a 1TB HDD connected to my computer in the basement via USB). After taking a few seconds to gather the first few pictures from the USB--> wireless connected storage device, the WDTV Live streamed the videos seamlessly! I even paused one for like 8 minutes while making dinner, and it resumed with no noticeable glitches, artifacts, or rendering/buffering. The second (and only other) file type I attempted to play was a 1080p TS file I had recorded from my cable box. This took a little bit longer between hitting play and seeing video on the screen, but time was minimal. I want to say no more than 4 or 5 seconds. Again, it had to pull the video from the HDD to the computer via USB, and...

Best choice for the $100 range of devices
I want to start by letting you all know that I'm very picky about my electronics and I'm not easily satisfied nowadays, so I always play with several products before sticking with one. I've gone through the wdtv live plus (grey model with small remote), sony smp-n100, and the apple tv 2 before trying out this device (also used various BD players, gaming consoles for netflix/youtube streaming). I must say that this unit takes the cake in terms of what you get for the price.Too lazy to give you my full story and thoughts so I'm just going to sum it up and give comparisons to the atv2, which I'd consider the next best choice for a set top box.-Video quality exceeded my expectations (netflix, youtube, network streaming)-Youtube steams HD (unlike smp-n100 and other revisions of the wdtv live/plus)-Wifi is integrated in this unit but won't see my N network (no big deal)-Youtube won't allow you to access your subscriptions from the app, only your...

Excellent Network File Streaming Device!
I recently decided to start a little weekend project of completely digitizing my 200+ home DVD collection. I wont get into any arguments over the legal ramifications of this type of project, but rest assured every digital movie in my collection is a straight rip of a physical DVD I own. That being said, I really needed a good option to actually "deliver" these movies to my HD TV in my living room. I have an Xbox 360 but that just didnt seem to be making the cut. So I started researching these fancy smart set-top boxes. At first I was convinced the Roku XS 2 was the way to go - but I started reading more and more about its lack of specific filetype support (i.e. MKV, M4V, AVI to name a few). That and it really didnt do network streaming/sharing well (if at all). I saw the WD TV Live HUB with 1TB harddrive for 199 and thought that was just a little too steep for my price range (the Roku is 99 afterall). Then I somehow accidentally found this device on Amazon. The price...

"We are in Buckingham Palace, the very heart of the British nation. Sherlock Holmes, put your trousers on!"
Such was the ego-stroking the cast & creators received for their first series of SHERLOCK, they couldn't help but gain huge confidence as they try to top themselves in Series 2. Steven Moffat always did have roaring self-esteem, and so he and co-creator Mark Gattis shrugged and decided to take on the three most iconic touchstones in the Sherlock Holmes canon. Series 2 is a (mostly) brilliant reworking of, in Moffat's own words, "the Hound, the Woman, and the Professor."It was a ba11sy move to reimagine Sherlock Holmes in 21st Century England. That it worked tremendously is due to smart writing and the amazing chemistry between the two leads, Cumberbatch and Freeman. The writers inserted clever touches such as the onscreen texts which reveal Holmes' instantaneous deductions and his ready application of contemporary tools (cell phones, the Internet, etc.) to aid his investigations. In this universe, Holmes attains his clients primarily thru Watson's popular online blog in...

Absolutely Worth It
This is the first series that I've seen from BBC, and let me tell you: it did not disappoint! The superb acting is matched only by the writing and effects, and the chemistry between Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman (as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively) lends the series a realism that sucks you in and makes you root for them from the first minute. Although set in the 21st century, this series stays faithful to the canon, with details that any true Sherlock Holmes fan will appreciate. You will want to watch them again and again. It will definately be worth the money, once it's available.

Product Description

Nominated for 4 primetime Emmys, Sherlock is back with Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson in three new stories. In A Scandal in Belgravia, Sherlock gets embroiled in the complex plans of the dangerous and desirable Irene Adler, and finds himself employing every one of his remarkable skills to survive as the unlikely duo square off in a battle of wits... and perhaps emotions? The Hounds of Baskerville whisks the increasingly popular detective and Watson to the wilds of Dartmoor, and face to face with the supernatural lurking in the eerie landscape. Meanwhile, Moriarty is still out there in the shadows, and is determined to bring Sherlock down - at whatever the cost - in The Reichenbach Fall. With beguiling performances, witty scripts and some of the most intriguing characters ever created, it's no wonder that Sherlock has proven to be a worldwide success. Top to learn more

According to the BBC video (which is pretty short and you should totally watch), Suelo now lives on “mulberries and wild onions, scavenges roadkill raccoons and squirrels,” and also engages in some good old-fashioned dumpster diving. I think it would ultimately be a very lonely life, one that would probably prevent the big things (having kids), as well as the little things (having friends over for wine, going to the movies, etc. Being a person who is constantly stressed about money, even when there is enough, I paused behind Ross and watched the video over his shoulder. Just because it has been proven that a person CAN live without money, it does not mean that everyone is morally obligated to do so, or even that we all would become as liberated as this man.  Or, as the BBC adorably calls it, “The American Who Quit Money.   It’s true that there’s no moral obligation here to give up money, and you’re right, in that for this individual in particular, an extreme change is what worked for HIM. In the meantime, Daniel Suelo operates a blog , as well as a website: Living Without Money. What’s particularly fascinating is that the author actually knew his subject, Daniel Suelo, before he gave up money.  ”There goes Ross and his super hippie videos,” was my first thought. There’s a pretty fascinating Q&A section there, where Suelo answers questions like: “Do you get sick from roadkill. Usually it takes me months, years even, to buy buzzy new books. A true story about a man who gave up his life savings ($30) in 2000, and walked away from money — totally. ” Like going vegan, becoming polygamous, or devoting oneself to the Buddhist faith, I believe that such extreme lifestyle changes are not for everyone. I also know that there’s real pride in going to work and earning a living.

The BBC ’s iPlayer is the most successful and most intensively used catch-up service in the world but it’s true that, after that seven day public service window, a large proportion of what the BBC makes and broadcast is never seen or heard of again.
